Just finished 'White Gold' by Giles Milton - the story of white slavery and the Barbary pirates. Eye-opening stuff.
I've read all the Graves books, everything Mary Renault ever wrote, 'Alexander the Great' by Robin Lane Fox. Also all of McCullough (including the non-Rome stuff). I think Renault's trilogy (Fire...
Tell a lie - I've actually read 'On Sparta' by Plutarch which was very good. I shall have to investigate further. :D
I've read some of the Scarrow books. I'll have a look at Plutarch. Cheers.
If you like historical novels (I do, I like history but don't like 'dry' books) try 'Gates of Fire' by Stephen Pressfield - the story of Thermopylae.
Two history books that I thought were good ...
'Imperium' by Robert Harris. Historical novel about Cicero (Ancient Roman stuff). Good read. Hardback available from Asda £9.97
I consumed vast quantities of books when I was at sea. 8 hours with the headphones on and nothing to do but listen for your callsign and read.
'Nathaniel's Nutmeg' by Giles Milton. It tells the story of how the British swapped a small island called 'Run' in SE Asia with the Dutch for a slightly larger island called 'Manhattan' in the Hudson...
If you want to learn about the Pisskop Rooinek, Grandpa Chook and the snake with no hat go and buy yourself a copy of 'The Power of One' by Bryce Courtney. :D
I'm halfway theough the latest Flashman - "Flashman on the March". Tales of the Abyssinian War in Flashy's inimitable style :D
"The Recollections of Rifleman Harris" - the memoirs of an ordinary soldier in the 95th Rifles.
Rubicon: The Triumph and Tragedy of the Roman Republic by
Tom Holland. Brilliant narrative history!
Gates of Fire - Stephen Pressfield
Life in Nelson's Navy - Dudley Pope
The Grass Crown (and other novels about Rome) - Colleen McCullough
The Sharpe series
The Hornblower series
If you are into Buddhism, may I suggest that you read the official Thai or Thai-Pali/Sanskrit version. I presume you can read it, looking at your signature.
The English translations on the site...
If you look here you don't even need to buy the book :D
