Thanks mate - I actually only had time to check out central watch today before leaving (hadn't realised that most of these places would be closed on the weekend), but it was well worth the trip!...

Think your hunch is right in that it's a plated case. Also right in that if I had to rank the work I wanted done the dial is probably the best part about the watch - think I'll leave this one alone....
