One of the finest sub-40£ single malts out there, in my opinion. The 8yo CS is pretty good too, although I'm not yet convinced by the Heavily Peated.
There's a peated version too - Smokey Monkey. I think they swap out the Kininvie for Ailsa Bay, but not entirely sure. I find it to be a decent mixer for when a cocktail calls for peated whisky.
From memory - and it was a few years ago that I last did the tour, they use pure spring water for distilling and to bring the distillate down to "cask strength". Bottling is onshore - Deanston...
Yes. And yes. Also had an interesting tasting this week with the London Whisky Club, where we sampled eight bottlings.
Some good stuff coming out of Ledaig (and Tobermory and the rest of the Distell stable).
Just a shame the latest releases have been priced so high; I appreciate that the owners need to recoup the...
As blended whiskies go, it's certainly one of the most consistent (it's blend of an unnamed grain whisky and Miyagikyo and Yoichi single malts). Nikka Days (another blended whisky) is a lot cheaper...
It's been interesting to drink the young Bunnas. I have another one of those on the go - five year heavily peated from three ex-bourbon casks, at 58.9% (1/720 bottles). I also have the 5YO 58.3%...
It's from the Miyagikyo distillery, apparently.
Hope you enjoy it.
Thank you! And thanks to previous poster about the blind tasting idea. I have never thought to conduct a blind tasting blind. I must admit, I tend to do more wine tasting blind, but it just seems odd...
What am I missing about that Norlan glass? Is it for people who find the colour and texture of whisky too distracting?
Edit - those were the Sold Out MoM prices. TWE has Hibiki 17 for 550£ (limited to six bottles per person).
They should be at c175£ and c450£ respectively...
Another vote for the LWC. A really good club - and not just for Londoners!
I thought it as underwhelming and overpriced. I can't find my notes (I may not even have taken any). It's disappointing, because it's obviously a very good distillery, and I was a huge fan of the 18,...
Pretty sure it's core. Not sure why; it's pretty forgettable.
I wish I only had five...
More like 25.
Finished a Caol Ila 31yo last night, so at least making some inroads.
The use of peat from Aberdeenshire (or wherever on the mainland) rather than local peat, was because they couldn't get the pppm above 44 using Islay peat. It's not clear why this was the case, but it...
Me too. Good people. Good tastings.
Depending on time, etc, Campbeltown is worth a visit: the Glen Scotia distillery is excellent, and has a number of tours / warehouse experiences. Springbank (including the two other expressions,...
@smoz
Excellent stuff. Glad you had a good time on Islay.
The Kilchoman and Bunna tours are also pretty good - the latter's getting a £6/7m investment from its parent company (Distell) at the...
The Laddie Warehouse tasting is very good - but either don't drive, or take some kind of sample bottles with you to decant.
The new Ardnahoe Distillery is probably worth a visit, and the Kilchoman...
I rather liked the Kilkerran HP. Pretty good for a young whisky.
The latest 12yo was superb, as usual. Probably the best single malt out there under 40 quid (along with the SB10).
I thought the same. Something about the release in August last year that was rather special. I stocked up on it, and have three unopened bottles.
