In the mid 90s I had a couple of close encounters. Hit a small bird whilst I was going a bit quick (no idea what species), the impact on my shoulder took my hand off the bar and left a good bruise through a leather jacket.
The scariest was riding back to med school across Salisbury plain at night. A badger ran under my front wheel, causing my ZZR600 to take off. The impact ripped the belly pan off and on landing and I went into a bit of a tank slapper. Still have no idea how I stayed on, but pulled over at a village pub that was still open to stop shaking and borrow tools to get the flapping bits of fairing off.
Luckily not had anything since!
Your memory serves you well. Without doubt, the gnarliest part of the Hardknott Pass is close to the Eskdale end going East, and in comparison, the Wrynose Pass is a walk in the park. Other than a couple of moments caused by stupid people in cars, I enjoyed the experience this morning and the weather was pretty epic for mid-September.
I'd recommend this route to anyone - and think it would be doable on any motorbike, although clearly it'll be easier on something with a good turning circle.

It's the MRA Vario screen. It comes with the spoiler pre-attached and that's the bit that does the magic. It's a bit taller than the standard GS screen, but I still look over it rather than through it. In fact, for me, I get the best wind protection with the screen lowered by one turn. Other than a bit of wind noise on my shoulders, this is great at "motorway" speeds.

I may give it a go weather permitting on Sunday, with me mate on his S1000RR. However, we do like scooting round North Wales to Barmouth, love them roads. Lets see what the weather brings though.

Hubs and rims now powder coated satin black and respoked with polished stainless steel spokes and Triumph rim transfers to add to previous modifications.
Back now after an 8 day tour of the Aragon region of Spain...simply brilliant, especially the near empty roads...

Here's a fun pic. In the process of moving so went to look for quotes at the new place. London and parked on the drive. Can't see anywhere on the website to add the tracker but can't imagine it's going to take £6.5k off. This is the cheapest and only quote supplied from the comparison site used. Thanks! Taken last Sunday lunchtime. The ST's mine and the Monster belongs to a good friend of mine. I'll post a few more pics tomorrow but suffice to say we had a great time.Sent from my SM-T800 using TZ-UK mobile app
A few pics from the Rhyl DGR. As you can see, the weather wasn’t on our side, but them welsh boys and girls are made of stern stuff so it was still a great turnout....

"Parked on the drive' is becoming a 'no-no' in bike insurance it might seem.
I've just added another bike with my existing insurers and when I said it'd be left on the drive I was told they wouldn't cover it unless it was in a garage - both day and overnight. I expressed my puzzlement at that as my other bikes were only required to be garaged overnight and was told they wouldn't be covered (at renewal) unless they were garaged at all times. :dontknow:

It’s not that uncommon; I did the usual sites for my 83 GPz750 which I’ve been modifying. It’s probably worth a couple of grand max and I had a quote for £6500 with a £4500 excess.
That was 1000 miles/year with it locked up in the garage. I paid £77 TPO this year but now have the names of a couple of specialist insurers who are supposedly very reasonable.
Obviously the number of bikes being stolen from driveways/parked outside is having an effect on insurance. The ‘Chuck it in a van and gone’ gangs are so quick, day or night.
It’s so hellish down here in Tarragona I’ve decided to stay another day then take 2 stops back to the Bilbao ferry.
The weathers hotter than an English summer, there has to be at least another month of bike riding.
On arrival I saw one of only 2 pops yoshimura suzi 750s being unloaded for a presentation to a Spanish racer.
They took pictures of me on the bike and invited me to the ceremony.
After that I watched practice for tower building with the locals,an amazing experience.
Then went to a rock party I was invited to till 5am I didn’t drink so I could ride the next day.
But the Roman ruins where so interesting I spent the day exploring instead.

Would you mind sharing them? Think I'll need all the help I can get!I totally get that but what's annoying is the comparison sites don't let you explain your set up.
I have an alarm, immobiliser, two top spec abus disc locks (one per disk on the front wheel), a 19mm almax through the back wheel to an anchor with squire ss65cs and a BikeTrac tracker with data markings/smart water. No website lets you explain that. All I can put is security 1 and security 2 so I can only put two of the above. So annoying.
On the plus side my wife is 80% happy as I might sell the bike and 20% scared I pay the 7 grand to ride it for a year.
Infuriating.
Going to take a ride out to On Yer Bike today... any locals fancy joining me or meeting up there?
Would love to but it was my wife's birthday in the week so have to take her to Bluewater. I know what I'd rather be doing today though... especially after paying £200 to change my insurance for two months on a £1.5k policy taken out 10 months ago. My bike is probably £500 per ride ATM :(
I took the KTM Adventure out (I love this bike!) today on part of the South Wales Trans Euro Trail form Risca across to Neath. More road work than I anticipated but the tracks were not too bad when I got on them considering the amount of rain we have had recently. There were some rather deep water filled areas and washed out, deep stony ruts but it was good to get out.
Managed to drop it a couple of times and took several wrong turns, one resulting in a visit to, and spin around, a field full of sheep!
I didn't take my GoPro but got a couple of pictures - see, the sun does shine in Wales!

I’ve washed my bike and changed the oil,it still needs some tinkering since my return on Friday night.
Hard to believe I was riding these roads and keeping out of the blistering sun last week.
I try to avoid gravel roads but a few times I had to brave it,they scare me.

Thanks higham5, the bike actually handles really well off road - you just have to have a bit of faith in it and yourself! The only problem I have is barely being able to touch the floor. It isn't much fun trying to keep upright on tiptoes when I get stuck on a slippery hill, or my nemesis at the moment, is rock steps - I have dropped the bike regularly on those. Luckily only a few scrapes and a broken mirror so far.
Some really lovely bikes on display, I don't ride myself but still appreciate them

So (!:smug:), the Harley has gone to it's new owner in Kent, and it's time to move on. Will miss it for sure but it's time for something else!
Today had one of these out on test, from the local dealer, and to be honest I really enjoyed it.

My pal a lifelong Enfield fan has bought one. It looks and sounds lovely, the running in regime is ridiculous something like nothing over 50 mph for the first 500 miles , but after that it looseness up. If you buy one buy shares in Solvol Autosol because with those polished crankcases you will bestow some serious cleaning.
Heads up
I’ve just ordered a copy,I would consider myself quite experienced nowadays but there’s still more routes to find.
