The H. Moser & Cie Sports Watch - a review

I have been asked a few times to post a review of my “Moser Pioneer Rotating Bezel Funky Blue”. A silly name but the watch apparently was never meant for commercialised production. Let's just call it the sports watch.

The origins of the watch are somewhat hard to believe, Moser themselves said they left some prototypes to show retailers on a tray at SIHH 2019. The problem was, somebody left this one on the wrong tray and the sales team ended up taking 50 orders. Moser decided to honour the 50 orders but the watch was never announced to the press and no more will ever be made.

Let’s look at the watch itself, 42.8mm case in steel with a satin finish and ‘ghost bezel’. The case is 12mm thick and is 120m water resistant. So more a desk diver than an actual diver but 120m is plenty for swimming and normal sporting activities. For me, anything around 42mm-44mm is perfect for this style of watch. In typical Moser fashion the case sides are beautifully sculptured.

Moser are renowned for their amazing dials and this one is no exception; this watch houses their ‘funky blue’ dial and it absolutely pops!

This is the first Moser to come on a bracelet, 22mm at the lugs tapering to 19mm at the clasp. The fit of the bracelet is extremely good with no gaps.

For me, my favourite part of the bracelet is the ‘on the fly’ adjustment mechanism. A simple push on the button built into the minimalist clasp gives up to 8 micro adjustments. Perfect for those days when your wrist gets hot and cold.

The watch is powered by the in house HM200 automatic movement which is very nicely finished giving 3 days power reserve and can be seen through the display back.

These were sold around the £13k mark, so is it a £13k watch? I’ve thought long and hard about this and I think the answer is probably yes. You have exclusivity of being just one of fifty watches in the world, you have the high end fit and finish associated with the Moser brand and a decent in house movement. It will be marmite to some and that’s fine, that is what makes this hobby so interesting.

I’ve been asked is it a keeper? … my 10 years on TZ has proven there is no such thing!

That really is a gorgeous looking watch with an interesting history behind it and a great level of exclusivity. I really really really like it, but wouldn't call it a Sports Watch - there's not many 'sports' I would undertake wearing that!

I was really, really unsure about this watch when photos were first released. However, it's grown on me a lot since then and... well, it's a Moser!

I've yet to set eyes on a Moser I don't like (I've probably not looked hard enough...), and this is no exception: beautiful thing.

Given it "accidentally" sold 50 units when unintentionally pimped at just one trade show, (and assuming the story's not just marketing BS), it seems daft not to have gone into series production, especially given the lukewarm reception the (lovely!) Streamliner has received...

I like that a lot. Looks like the wider bezel would mean that it wears slightly smaller than the similarly cased size non twisty bezel Pioneer. Which for me is a good thing.

The design of the bracelet also looks spot on.

A shame that it isn’t a normal production model.

A wider bezel and date function and I'd be in (for when they next leave it in the wrong tray).

That looks fantastic and one I never saw before.I’m a fan of bracelet links and fitting. The bracelet adjustment is like that found on GO’s.

A winner for me, I've yet to dive deeper.

I’ve seen this watch and as good as Tony’s pictures are it looks even better in person, I’m a huge fan of Blue sunburst dials and that’s probably the best example I’ve seen.
It’s also refreshing to see someone who likes the more obscure brands and makes a nice change from the ‘Rolex sports models only’ folk.
Wish I had the funds to buy that beautiful Rose Gold LW Oktopus that some lucky forum member recently purchased.

Great watch & I’ve been one of them pestering you for a review. In my limited knowledge of the Holy Trinity - PP, VC & AP I’d rather have this Moser than their sport equivalent. In my eyes a step up from Rolex and those in that bracket. I’ll never get a chance to own one unless they bring it into regular production [emoji122]??

That really is lovely, I do love a bit of colour on a watch - as you know.

Great review and photos. I love my Mosers, sadly my Pioneer Center Seconds is locked away in my office - with no access until who-knows-when. I think my Pioneer is midnight blue rather than funky blue, either way your photos helped with separation anxiety.

I’ve seen this watch in person and I can’t deny that it’s absolutely stunning ! The blue dial really pops and the overall finish is just superb.

Great dial, not sure about the bezel.

Absolutely love it and the story behind how you acquired it. Everything is spot on for me. Fume dial, thin case, uncomplicated rotating bezel and a well made integrated bracelet.

I like it quite a bit. Congratulations and enjoy it.

Lovely looking and unusual watch.

Funny one though, the minimalist dial and the hands make it look like a dress watch, but the bezel and the clasp look like a sports watch.

Maybe it's the true definition of a desk diver.

Did anyone see what happened to the one for sale on Watch Collecting?

I presume it didn't hit the reserve and won't be offered again as it seems to not be on the sold section nor the deal now.

Was at £7,500 I think when I lost track of it.

When was it on? I missed that. They don't appear very often, which is not surprising as there are only 50 of them.
There have been a couple or maybe even the same watch on C24. It was poa and they wanted €23,500 for it!

I'd missed this first time round so nice to see. As a fan of blue dials I'd certainly be interested in one at the right price.
