I cannot find a “show us your day-date” thread, so looking for some suggestions.
Old man Wrists has decided he wants a day-dater.
Max spend about a grand... happy to be much cheaper.
Needs to be legible, as he is 82!
Must have decent lume - not necessarily a lighthouse, but nothing vintage.
He’s not a Gold man, particularly.
He likes anything - no brand allegiance, but he has always had Seikos mostly.

Plenty of day/dates in the Seiko catalogue.
What about a 007 or similar?

Day-date is part of Seiko 5 'philosophy', so anything from that line (it will most likely come with the non-hacking 7S26 or hacking 4R36 movement).
The most popular Seiko solar day-date calibre is probably V158 (but from my experience, the day wheel isn't the pinnacle of legibility).
Of Swiss stuff, check out watches based on the ETA 2836-2 -- apart from the usual suspects (Hamilton, Tissot, Certina, Mido, which BTW are likely to have different modified movement references), you might want to check eg Fortis.
Citizen Eco-Drive -- there should be an abundance of day-date models, too.
I would suggest trying to find a second hand Sinn 104, like this one, or one of the other colours available (white, blue, grey etc...)

Definitely possible to get one under 1k second hand.

If he's happy with quartz then my stock answer..Citizen PMD56..titanium, sapphire crystal, bulletproof eco drive, super legibility and superb accuracy...
Hamilton Khaki King is the obvious answer I think.
In fact, if you're looking for the full day function, not abbreviated, then I think you're pretty much restricted to the ETA 2834-2, so one of these:

Of all of those, I think only the Hamiltons are still in production.
I'm not aware of anything else that has the full day in that price range.

Junghans Meister driver day date may be an option if looking for something non-diver and seems good legibility. New is within budget on chrono24.
