Went to see it on Saturday and have left it until today to let it sink in before commenting. Obviously just my opinion, but here goes...
**** SPOILERS ******
I REPEAT:
**** SPOILERS ******
I actually didn't mind most of the humour, although I didn't like the turning of Hux into a parody of himself. The lightsaber chuck and Poe's crank call made me chuckle.
I hated (with a passion) the Leia Poppins moment, the CGI on her gown looked dreadful to my eyes, worse than Neo in the Matrix films. I was looking forward to her performance after all the press junket talk of of it being fantastic, but to be honest it wasn't anything special. It left me slight deflated to be honest, as I wanted it to be a fitting tribute.
The Finn/Rose thread was overlong and didn't really add anything (except maybe getting them into the correct place for the third act). But I like the Rose character, the actress was terrific.
I had no idea Ade Edmondson was in it, and yet bizarrely I spotted Gareth Edwards' (Rogue One director) cameo.
I genuinely didn't see the twist coming regarding Luke at the end, I just assumed he was using the Force to avoid/deflect the AT-AT fire.
The very last scene at the stables was a bit naff.
Adam Driver was head and shoulders above the others in terms of performance.
I didn't mind the porgs.
And finally...
********* STILL SPOILERS HAPPENING *********
How the hell did Snoke, who was nattering on about being able to see into Kylo Ren's soul etc., fail to notice that Ren was manipulating the lightsaber with the Force?
On balance, I though it was a solid but unexceptional SW film. The reviews ranking it up there with Empire are off the mark in my opinion, but it wasn't a bad film. I'm up for a second viewing over Christmas, maybe that'll give me a different perspective on some of the weak areas now I know the plot points.
