high gloss watch straps

Hi, I am looking at several handmade straps from Vietnam makers on ebay. Most are croco/alligator and several have a wonderful high gloss finish. Normally I just use clear shoe polish on my straps to give a slight sheen.
However the high gloss straps do in my opinion look quite nice but I am concerned that the patent finish will easily rub off and that I shall be forever re-applying the liquid.
Has anyone on here had any experience of these "patent" straps, whether good or bad. thanks very much
