Friday Watches - September 2022
As fears about returns on the secondary watch market played out center stage, we saw one Liz enter upstage right while, shortly afterwards, another exited upstage left, borne on a gun carriage. The death of the nation's Grandmother cruelly robbed us of seemingly the only adult in the room in which our ruling "elite" reside. This departure seemed to trigger chaos as a simple fiscal event unleashed a chain reaction of other fiscal events and even resignation events.
On the Friday watch front things were not quite as dramatic. This September had a rare fifth Friday as one managed to sneak in on the 30th. It was a month of patina, kicked off by Sish101 demonstrating that he has no fear of extreme patina with his Citizen 7Star Deluxe. In terms of the overall numbers we hit the second highest total this year of 680, although this averaged down to 136 which is towards the bottom of the table for the year. Brand numbers were looking up with 127, the highest number since April.
Delving into the fray at the top of the chart we saw Rolex picking up where they left off in August, being beaten into third place and tying with stable mate Tudor on ten. Remarkable Rolex only managed to catch up in the dying minutes of the day. On the ninth all three of the usual suspects tied on fourteen. Rolex finally woke up and smelt the music of pending defeat and stormed into first place, being the first brand to score more than twenty (three more) since July. Things were a little closer on the twenty third but the results had a familiar order to them. The cheeky extra Friday was not enough for Seiko or Omega to overhaul the eventual winners.
Elsewhere plenty of other brands had good months. Both Tissot and Junghans hit all time highs of eight and four respectively. Patek, with six, had their best month since April as did Omega with sixty six. Heuer did one better with their best month this year breaking into double figures for the first time since December last year with ten. Zenith bounced back from their worst ever month by scoring their best month this year (fifteen) and even exceeded last months score in one week, achieving their best ever week of seven. As it has been difficult to spot which brands have done badly, having had enough negative news recently, I have decided to and will not look for the poor performers.
As mentioned previously 127 brands were represented this month. Twelve of the the 127 made their first appearances this year and a further nine made their first appearances on the Friday Thread. Among the debutantes were Heritor, Hrudoland and Kubold. Those returning to the thread included Buren, J W Benson, M B & F and Lorus. We also saw our first Draken since the twelfth of June 2020.
Patina, did I mention patina earlier? Sish101 must have struck a chord with some members as, before the patina vs grot debate re-ignited, various other patinated watches appeared. Including JackW's Movado Calendar, Slevin Kelevra's Seiko 6309 and Snoodles' old Sub. At the other end of the spectrum we had Walkerwek1958's black dialled Omega Constellation "pie pan" and Toshi's Aquastar Benthos. Two final watches that are worth of a mention due to their uniqueness are Zen123's Boldr Venure Singularity and Wileey's MAD 1 Red. And a question for all to ponder, how many functions have Zenith squeezed into joe narvey's Doublematic?
