Interesting... I always assumed it was a called a W10 and the name referenced the stamp on the back?https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/202...0fce88938c.jpg

I believe the W10 on the back indicates it was issued to (or by) the Army. Mine has 0552 which I've read is Navy.

This may be of interest.
W10 is army, 0552 /0555 are RN/RM up to '95, subsequently 0552 covers both, 6B /6BB are RAF. 66 Is scientific instrument, 45 is a subset of 66 that covers timekeeping. 99 is the NATO identifier for the UK. The last bit of the number is the URN for the watch.
The line below, 3399/97 is the 3399th watch ordered in the 1997 contract year.
Sometimes you also get a unit serial number scratched or stamped into the back as the watches as they were "starred items" that had to be accounted for by the CQMS/RQMS.
troops signed them in or out of the stores using form G1098, hence a G10 watch.
You had form G1098 for stuff held centrally in unit stores & form 1157 for personal issue kit like clothing etc.
Error, post 95 it is 0555 that covers both the RN & RM. Also forgot to mention the crowsfoot or broad arrow that has marked government property since Elizabeth's time (the first one).
