My F11 was totalled last week (not economical to repair) so the insurance is giving me £10500.
I am looking at what I can get in that price bracket.
The same 5 series estate but with a 3.0 (I had a 5.20D)? Any version recommended or warned against ?
Not too keen on Audi ( really disappointed by the new A5 I had as a courtesy car 2 years ago) but prepared to listen.
Prior to the F11 was an E class which I liked, too.
Usage is short commute during the year but 600 miles to France at least twice a year, with female teenager and dog (hence the estate).

Get the new model, I have just got rid of my F11 for the new model 2 years old so it’s lost a load of money, the drive is so much better and it’s blessed with loads of standard kit

Unfortunately the budget won’t stretch. It’s been kind of forced on me, not like when you plan and save for changing your car.

I still feel weary as I cannot say Jaguar without saying Land Rover in the same breath, and that carries images of expensive maintenance and lengthy spells off the road but that’s possibly unfair.

From what I remember the shared 3L Diesel engine has well documented crankshaft issues which would put me off.
What about a Skoda superb, Evo magazine ran one as a long termer and really rated it. Admittedly it was the top of the range petrol model though.

With that sort of driving, I would consider a petrol engine too. What’s your normal annual total?

I would say the Merc is a better car. I was in one to the airport in Italy recently, I couldn't believe how huge they are inside

I do about 10 to 12000 miles per year.

Yes the Merc is great but mine was an 04 and turned out to be rather expensive (turbo, brake lines, etc...). I know that they got better after 06 but it still stings a bit. I’ll still have a look, but the same question: probably a 12 to 63 car, which engine?

With that milage sounds like maybe a petrol would be a better choice.

With that mileage and the short commutes I’d go petrol personally.

E-class every time. I currently drive an E01 Beamer as I wanted to try and compare it against the Mercedes and I cannot say on how many levels I am disappointed. Can't wait to get back to Merc.

The 2.2 TDCi Titanium X Sport Mondeo estate is good looking car. Pretty decent tech too.

I’m guessing your commute is around 10-15 miles each way?
And from some of your cycling posts predominantly lanes and B roads?

This sounds ideal territory for a petrol rather than derv.

I’d also suggest looking at the Mondeo estate.

French folk do seem to have a bit of a love affair with the Diesel engine. Based on the horror stories my mate (whom runs a small independent garage) tells me, especially about diesels that do short trips, I wouldn’t touch one with a barge pole.🤔🤔

In that price bracket I wouldn’t touch a Merc. My family have run a number of E class taxis, and all but one of the older, pre 2014 have been a nightmare on maintenance and repairs.

I had a CLS before the Beamer and it was a peach of a car. I often ask myself why I 'upgraded' to the BMW.

Never had an E-class but assumed it was the same technical platform as the CLS?

I'm not sure of the platform. Just the expense!

I really liked the BMW :)

Had 5 Beemers in a row, then got a E350 and the difference in quality, reliability and driving experience was huge. I wouldn't go back to BMW.

I would be looking for a E300 BlueTEC hybrid.

Have a couple of friends with XF's, and both are impressed with them. They certainly have a nice ride quality in my experience.
