You will not find a more cosmopolitan city South West of Bristol.
I wouldn't live in Clifton, too many ex-London bankers living of their early retirements pots. Who have made it criminally expensive to buy a good sized place.
I live in Redland, and it's fantastic.
Having said that, it seems you may want to live outside a City, so how about the Chepstow area? Just over the (now free to cross) bridge, easy access to Bristol and Cardiff, and all the joys of the Wye Valley, Offa's Dyke, the Forest (be careful) etc. And significantly cheaper than the Bristol area, although the abolition of the bridge toll has levelled it out a bit.
I am also a big fan of North Devon, but it's only City, Barnstaple, leaves a lot to be desired.
