Watched Violent Night. Not artistically competant or amazing but my new favourite Christmas film.
I did notice it was directed by Tommy Wirkola of Dead Snow 1 and 2 fame and there were shades of the humour and gore present.

Just watched the Whitney Houston film at the pictures.
Wow - really excellent (I thought so anyway).
A mix of new and old.
Top Gun Maverick: Third time around and still great.
Die Hard. Christmas fare for me. I also usually watch The Muppets Christmas Carol and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation but they both got a reprieve this year.
Mulholland Drive. I'm never sure what to think of David Lynch. An odd movie with some moments of brillance.
Not a movie but a Netflix series. I started watching Blood origin the Witcher. It was the lazy fantasy crap that makes for easy watching.
It was going okay with some elves and dwarves , politics and fights, and then Lenny Henry appeared as a wizard of some sort and spoke with a brummie accent.
I don’t have anything against the accent but I can’t get past Tizwas.
To Die for
really good Thriller - enjoyed the not too predicable plot, and 80's look even though it was shot in 1995
starring Nicole Kidman, Matt Dillon, and very young Joaquin Phoenix & Casey Affleck with cameo from David Cronenberg
The Shawshank Redemption.
I saw it on the telly. What a great ending. I enjoyed it. I haven't seen it before because I don't watch films very much. I have only been to the cinema twice. The first time Dad took me to see The Battle of Britain, the next time was to see Tora, Tora, Tora. that was the last time I went to a cinema and we don't have a video or any of that fancy telly. Just the main channels. This film was good though.
Romantic Road currently on Netflix.
Eccentric couple in their later years decide to take their 1936 Rolls Royce for a 5,000 mile trip through India and Bangladesh to attend a photographic exhibition.
A gentle, heart warming documentary/travelogue with a very convivial couple, which celebrates their endearing love for one another and India.
Cheers,
Gary
Tora, Tora, Tora definitely wasn't released in 1941, it's about 1941...

Pale Blue Eye, superb who done it. Some great cameos & a showcase of Christian Bale outstanding acting.

Totally agree great cast. I thought Poe was great (Dudley from Harry Potter who’d have thought) worth a watch.

Aces High (1976)
Good cast, Malcolm Mcdowell and Christopher Plummer and cameo from Trevor Howard and John Gielgud
Considering it was made in 1976 the dog fights were quite watchable, it had a good plot, and really showed how many young lives were tragically cut short in WW1.
Correct. Tora,Tora,Tora was a new film then too, it was in colour. I can't see it being made in 1949. Dad died in 1981 but I was at sea from 1975, so those are the only two times I have been to the cinema. They closed, or it changed ownership, The Drake Cinema sometime in the mid 80s.
We watched The Women in the Window last night - not bad, probably 6/10(?)
HELP! (Netflix). 8/10 from me.
Not really a film to 'enjoy', as it is quite harrowing but I thought it was well done. Quite upsetting though, so not really a Saturday night with popcorn and the kids movie.... It is about a care home during the Covid outbreak, so not the lightest of subject matter.
All Quiet on the Western Front (Netflix). 8/10 from me.
Very well done, as others have already said.
The Toll
on amazon
Good
dark, violent, but with some comedy. quite good plot
The Menu.
No Oscars up for grabs on this one but I enjoyed the concept.
Everything Everywhere All at Once - it's as good as everyone says.
Don't watch a trailer or read anything about it, just watch. On the biggest screen available!

Having just read the book, I rewatched A Bridge Too Far recently.
Incredible cast and some brilliant set pieces from the book, but it's too big a story to do justice even in quite a long film.
It would make a brilliant Band of Brothers style mini series, though.

If you have interest in this subject can I suggest the podcast 'We have ways of making you talk' with the historian James Holland and the comedian (& Arhnem nut) Al Murray. It's very good and has
quite a lot of episodes about the conflict
Alternatively another podcast 'Fighting on film' has a couple of episodes on the film, including one where they interview extras fro the film some great stories

Glad to see some more EEAAO fans! It's definitely different.
Last night I watched The Menu (on Disney+) which was not too long, had an ensemble cast, an interesting concept, and was well done. I almost always enjoy watching Ralph Fiennes do his thing and Anya Taylor-Joy is top class.

Soft & Quiet blew me away, probably best going in to it not knowing too much about it except that it is a horror/ thriller and a wild ride 😳 all filmed as one shot too.
Anya Tailor-Joy (sic) wasn't in Anna - it was Sasha Luss.
So in my continuing quest to catch up on some of the best films of 2022 I watched The Woman King.
I'd say the plot is reasonably predictable, but it didn't matter as the acting performances all around are great, the battle sequences are really good, and the film had real heart to it. Viola Davis never ceases to amaze and the rest of the core cast really rose to her level.

The Banshees of Inisherin. Very good.
Encore...if you've never seen Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road, do yourself a BIG favor and watch it. Non-stop action.
Rotten Tomatoes: 97% Certified Fresh.

Saw “A man called Otto” earlier today.
Excellent film with Tom Hanks at his best.
Everything he’s in is good and this was a great story.
Hidden Figures on Disney+
Women of colour working within NASA providing the computational clout needed in the early days of the space program during the time of racial inequality.
Recommended.

We watched that some time ago and I agree it's a very good film.
Could have been a heavy handed agenda film, but it gets you right on the main characters side and has you right behind them without any preachiness.
Highly enjoyable and uplifting.

Good Will Hunting. Not seen it in many a year. I thought Robin Williams' performance was magnificent.
The Bank of Dave, pleasant easy watch.
Watched that new one on Disney app, The Menu with Ralph Fiennes.. quite enjoyed it, bit different. But love most things with Fiennes!

We watched a couple of decent fillums last weekend; Unsane on film 4 was alright for a revenge flic and News of the World with Tom Hanks which we really enjoyed, as said he's always good value.
Oh, almost forgot we tried 'Everything Everywhere All at Once'. The only thing I can say is that it's not for sci fi fans. Chaotic turmoil with no meaning and a plot like a nest of writhing snakes. I also watched 'Ip Man 4, The Finale', much better Asian movie.
Watched Army of Thieves on Netflix recently and enjoyed every second, central character is a hoot.
Also enjoyed Pale Blue Eyes and Glass Onion (much better than Knives out)
Night Train to Lisbon (2013).
Excellent tense and gripping philosophical thriller, main role played by Jeremy Irons, covers some of the recent political history of Portugal so quite interesting to the martynjc household (The butcher of Lisbon) and the dictatorship, very well written. Some famous actors do the parts justice. Now I need to track down the book.
