Did you know that the Royal Yachting Association have registered the word "Yachtmaster" as a trademark; see RYA trademarks link (http://www.rya.org.uk/legalinformation/Pages/trademarks.aspx)?

Rolex hyphenate the name of their model to Yacht-Master and they have been making them since 1992. As the watch is obviously aimed a the sailing fraternity it can't be said that they're using the term in a totally different context. So does custom and practice allow them to continue using the name after the RYA registered it in 2001?

That depends on whether the RYA registered the mark in section 14 (watches, clocks & jewellery) - they didn't - http://www.ipo.gov.uk/domestic?domesticnum=2273556

Rolex registered the name "Yachtmaster" (without the hyphen) in 1990 in section 9 for barometers - http://www.ipo.gov.uk/domestic?domesticnum=1416452

Rolex registered the name "Yacht-Master" in section 14 in 1990 - http://www.ipo.gov.uk/domestic?domesticnum=1445783

Looks like Rolex got there first.

Thanks Eddie ... I didn't want to open any wounds, but I might have guessed that you'd have a definitive answer.
