I suppose we can now add a 2014 F1 engine to the list - who would have thought it ?

The massive concussive thump of a depth charge detonating. Only heard it once on a 'sea days' live firing exercise on HMS Defender off the Isle of Wight back in the 1960's. Once heard(and felt), never forgotten.

As an exmechanic I used to be great at this game. Used to be CVH engines, pintos, metro and mini engines, subaru flat fours, flat six porsches - especially air cooled, v12 jags and v8 rover engines

would struggle now although the outgoing volvo 5 cylinder is very distinctive and straight six bmw engines are about the only that jump out.

The 911 is pretty distinctive, as is the Aston V12, probably don't care enough about any others to take note.

Not particularly glamorous, but a Mitsubishi FTO with the V6 MIVEC engine had a very distinctive howl once all the valves were open. I still wind my windows down when I see one.

The new Jaguar F-type sound amazing.

V8 Morgans, living very close to the factory means I hear the new owners revving :)

There are 3 very distinctive engines for me, the VW air cooled flat 4,the Land Rover Discovery 2/Defender TD5, and the RX7-RX8 rotary engines.

I had a TD5 Disco but about the only thing I remember as being distinctive was the diesel chatter!

Brings back memories of doing tappets on Alpines and Horizons. You could sometimes get them to go quiet for a few days!

Herky bird C-130, those turbo props I recognise anywhere in the world when they fly over. I was in Singapore the other week and said thats a Herk to the people I was with and lo and behold it was too.

Yeh agree, I used to live in RAF Lyneham in the 80s and they flew directly over my house as it was just in front of the runway, we had landing lights to the field in front of us. They do sound differently now though as I believe the engines have been upgraded?

Probably the newer -J models with the different propellers (7 bladed Dowty R391 instead of the original 4 bladed Standard Aero 54H60), and engines (Rolls-Royce AE 2100 D3 instead of the old Allison T56).
