From experience, the best bet is sending it back to Nikon themselves as most of the UK (at least) repairers aren't great at dealing with the more modern kit.

Having established that the VR designation in Nikons range does not stand for Velocity Resistant I'm after recommendations as to where to get a lens repaired here in the UK, please.

I heard, via the forum, that THESE are very good.

If lens has been dropped and will not focus it is likely that the lens focusing mechanism/helicoil has been knocked out of alignment and should be a fairly simple repair ... phone Dave Boyle here http://www.camerarepairworkshop.co.uk/ and discuss and he might be able to help ... should not be too expensive if just a "velocity" knock ...

"Well they would say that ... wouldn't they!"
have to agree with sundial i sent my lens there after dropping it also a nikon.
back within the week proper old time service and skills and reasonable prices.
I have had both camera body and AF lens repaired in the last 12 months by Fixation in London. They are authorised service / repair agents by both Nikon & Canon. The charges seemed reasonable and the repairs were carried out within 5 - 6 days. Both bits of kit came back very well packed, I was well satisfied.

Thank you for all the suggestions.
It's now packaged up and about to be dispatched to A J Johnstone as per magirus's suggestionas they are Nikon approved and the chap I spoke to was very helpful.Originally Posted by magirus

UPDATE:
The lens returned this week from A J Johnstone and they've done an excellent job; it looks brand new!
Highly recommended.
