    Sad to hear this, this morning. Was a big Smiths fan in the '80s. Only saw them once, at Newcastle Mayfair. Queen is Dead tour.

    Wonder if Morrissey will have something to say.

    A truly iconic band of the 80’s that influenced so many bands, he was a part of that and will be remembered by many bass players.

    Great band and the late 70s/80s was a great time for Manchester bands: Smiths, Magazine, Buzzcocks, Joy Division/New Order, Inspiral Carpets, Frank Sidebottom. Been listening to Durrutti Column again recently.

    A great musician Andy, he formed a power house of a rhythm section with Joyce - such intricate but powerful bass lines. I met him briefly and he was modest and charming, a class act.
