I now you said no bands but nothing says gold like a gold band. A Rolex Midas.

That I like, even better with a blank face, ie no Rolex or Cellini.

If you buy one of those you will spend a lot of money too make yourself look dirt cheap.

Very true but a big gaudy gold bracelet makes the wearer look nouveau riche more than anything else. He's trying to hard to impress type of thing. The only thing that looks worse is the 1970s style of wearing a big gold medallion around the neck.

Which is your opinion, the owner of such a watch will have the opposite opinion, the watch may also have sentimental value - a gift, an inheritance, etc. Never judge a book by its cover! Just because you think it’s tacky does not mean everyone does.

Nouveau Riche is an interesting term, unless you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth, anyone with some capital, investments or property could be seen as Nouveau Riche by old money (or everyone poorer than you, if you are Jacob Rees-Mogg), wearing a gold watch or not is not going to change that.

I guess you think it’s ok to be Nouveau Riche, you just can’t look like it?
    But we digress…

Who buys a watch to impress people? It's one of the worst items for that.

I've been into watches since early 2000's and during the last 20 years maybe 2 people have even noticed my watch.

Day-Date in the pictures is not even mine and it belongs to a friend who's a genuine watch guy and didn't buy the DD to impress anyone. It's a historical piece in Rolex lineup for many reasons.

    Very beautiful and iconic model.

Saying that "DD is only for nouveau rich" is just jealousy and bitterness.

It's not my cup of tea, either. I don't feel comfortable with gold. But I sure respect the watch and admire it on my friend's wrist.

Here's the blog I wrote about it.

The DayDate is a good looking watch which is spoiled by a really gaudy bracelet. It would look a lot better if toned down with a good quality leather strap.

How about a Linde Werdelin Spidolite 3D? Gold, not on a blingy bracelet and quality.

Much less on secondary market though. I bought and sold mine for less than 10k. It is gold remember, it's not going to be cheap

You can do solid gold Rolex without spending a fortune if you are prepared to drop 2mm and go for the 34mm Date model, all the look at about a third the price of a vintage Day-Date, This is a 1970s model 1500:

It strikes me that there are plenty of watches that shout 'GOLD', but the tricky bit is that quite a few of them also seem shout 'worn by a Knobhead'....

It strikes me that only a pitifully sad individual would judge someone a ‘Knobhead’ on the basis of their wristwatch.

How about this? Massively gold, hugely gold, vastly gold, gold on gold on gold, with gold, and change from £125?

    Vomit at the ready.

Come on... Invictas are harmless fun.

That golden dial is a bit too much though.

I've always been a big fan of the BTR and I wouldn't mind owning this.

  32. #82
    This would be my pick.

It's not gold, but it definitely says 'I'm GOLD':

I know nothing about this watch but it looks cool and has a good pedigree. So I am asking a basic question, what makes these so special.

What’s special about any watch ?
What makes a Rolex better than a Tag ?
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I just love the design of these Monzas , the feel , the way they sit on my wrist and just how cool they are .
The calibre 17 , like the mine ? Nothing really other than the design and aesthetics.
The early ones without Tag branding are always popular along with the more expensive calibre 36.
I personally prefer the chrono pushers on the 17 but that’s my choice .
Just nice watches at a reasonable price point .

That said , I’ve absolutely no doubt I’ll sell this one , regret it and in the future buy another!

Isn’t the calibre 17 a rebranded ETA2894 modular chrono? Nothing wrong with it, I have one myself in fact.

I always thought it odd how TAG seem to get away with renaming movements.

As for the OP: it’s already been said. Vintage day date on a leather strap is the only way to go.

I believe you're right (not that I've been poring over these recently...), and I think cal 36 is a Zenith-based movement?

Were it me, I'd look for cal 17 if I were buying - servicing should be both easier and cheaper.

Another vote for a Rolex. Here's my 1503 Date from the late 60s and still "relatively" affordable even though it's on a bracelet.

It's clear you have a price cap but don't say what that is. It would be easier to recommend if you tell us what you're looking to spend?

I can't recall ever looking at a gold Daytona and thinking - I'll bet it's the bracelet that makes it expensive.

shouldn't your comment really be that you just don't want a bracelet as opposed to a bracelet making a watch too expensive?
