Unexpected NOS Rolex

I wonder where the old stock came from, and why it wasn’t sold years ago?

I've bought quite a few NOS watches over the years and in my experience it is often because they were returned to the distributors with an anomaly of some sort, marks etc.

Years later they are found and sold off.
