Out of twelve watches, 5 are divers. Is it usual to have more divers than other types?

5 out of 10 here and I’ve sold 2 recently so guilty as charged. When I first got into watches, divers were my main focus, but I’m trying to make my small collection more varied and interesting with the last 3 major purchases being chronographs:
Seems low to me! I’m at 5 out of 6, and the odd one out was a fairly recent addition. Am trying to diversify but divers still tend to appeal to me more than most

Again, 5 of 6 here
3 of 6 here
6 out of 7 here (or 9 if you include 1 G-Shock and 1 Garmin).
I’m saying nothing...
I think the majority of my watches are dive watches.
It's just a matter of time...
Out of my main 24
14 divers
6 chronos
4 others
All the rest, 50% divers
It depends how you define a dive watch. Out of interest, will you change anything as a result of the responses?
Definitely in the minority here, I have two divers out of 16. I might add that I have a WTB for a diver so very happy to increase my diver:all watches ratio.

2254, Cameron, Tuna, Willard, CWC RN Diver & 4 assorted Vostok Amphibias out of 16.
4 out of 12 is not bad at all. Some are obsessed with them and near all their watches are divers even though they dont dive, like ever
I was not actually sure, so I had to check...
Diver - 24
Chronograph - 17 (including one diver chronograph)
Others - 21 (three handers, GMT)
Digital - 2
1 of 5 (but very likely to be 1 of 6 very soon)
Yes you are allowed to continue buying dive watches.

Currently 7 in a small collection of 11. Would like to add a Sinn U50 too.
I’ve gone through periods of adjusting the collection to make it more “balanced” but seldom wear anything else, so just accept that I gravitate towards divers at the moment.

I'm not sure how many 'types' there are, or how you classify them?
Divers - sure
GMTs - sure
Chronos - sure
Dress - yes, but boundaries not clear
Digital - sure
Analogue - sure
Quartz - sure
Automatic - sure
Manual - sure
Divers, GMTs and Chronos are perhaps the easiest to classify precisely?
2 out of 3 for me, not including digitals.
5 out of 5 are divers, still plenty of variety and difference in style between then. No. 6, the new Citizen 1300 style reissue will be added in the summer.
8 out of 10 for me.The two non-divers are kept because they have sentimental value but they aren't worn very much.
I have 3 now out of many... not too bad!
1 of 6 ... had lots of entry level seikos and settled on a step up to a marine master.
cant be arsed with a Veblen over priced swiss equivalent.
i can swim but have other aspirations ... how many sports watches do you realley need ?
except a moser next perhaps
Hmm.
Divers
10/10 in the cheap box
1/7 in the posh box

Are 300m panerai's classed as divers?

Assuming the above PAM question, 12 divers, 3 others (1 GMT, 2 chronos).
Rob
I agree. What about 100m and what about the snap on casebacks?
I think I probably have 5 out of 13

Never understood the obsession with dive watches, many of them look very similar to me. I own a couple in a collection if 24 watches and one if those is probably getting the chop later this year.
If I had to define a diver as having 100m water resistance (or more) and a rotating 60 minute bezel + lumed pip, it would be 4 out of 8. One of them is a dive chrono and of the four non-divers, 2 aren’t running!
I’ve got a good number of divers. I’m certainly drawn to them more than anything else on SC. Probably less than 20% of my collection but, if I had only 3 watches, one of them would be a diver. Probably the 16600. (Nearly said if I had only one watch but I couldn’t exclude the Longines Greenlander)
1. I define a dive watch as having a unidirectional graduated bezel and 150m upwards of water resistance. What is your definition?
2. No.
I have somehow over the last 15 years acquired a small collection of varied types and brands and noticed that 5 out of 12 are divers. Admittedly they are very different from each other, but if I sold any, it would be a diver or two first.
Well, 16 out of 21 are divers. The others are a couple of G-Shocks, a 1016, a GMT, and a Speedy. Not much variety but I’m happy. Now what worries me is the number of Nato and Perlon straps I’m hoarding. That IS a sickness....
Yep, me too; 6 Divers, one GMT, a chrono, a G-shock and my dad's old 3 hander.
I'm not sure if it is an obsession for all dive watch owners. I think it's more a reassurance. For myself, it dates back to the 60's, 70's and 80's when most watches (that normal people could afford) were not very water resistant. I wrecked several watches with water. Water is the arch enemy of watches. The thinking was that if a watch was built for diving then it was plenty water proof for use above sea level.
It was 3/9 until this week (including 3 G-Shocks).
It's now 1/7, I will be adding another soon and also getting rid of a couple of the G-Shocks so it should be 2/6 fairly soon.
When I first started out gathering a collection I had it in the back of my mind that I needed to cover all bases - dress, chrono, diver etc. It took me a while to twig, possibly even too long, that it's pointless going down that path if you're not going to wear the damn things! I'm not a collector in the sense that I need a complete set of something, for example, I just buy watches to wear given my lifestyle, interest in a brand, maybe the movement tech and aesthetic preferences. If that means that I have more of one type of watch over any other then so be it.
I think that people sometimes get too hung up on the idea of having a varied selection of watch types to choose from in their watch box. It shouldn't matter if your collection is all divers, all pilot, all dress and so on, if you're wearing them - even if some of them sparingly - and you're happy with what you have then you've cracked it IMO.

At the moment its 2 of 5, the others being 2 dress of which 1 is my fathers and 1 pilots,
Currently I have an urge for a chronograph

One diver out of three watches.
I’ve had more than this but reduced my collection down to 2 or 3 different styles of watches which I can keep and wear on a regular basis.
I guess the AP Royal Oak is classified as a diver even though it doesn't have a rotating graduated bezel.
There is a definition of a diver that conforms to ISO6425 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Diving_watch

About 20 divers so I guess around 10%.
Cheers,
Neil.
Out of main collection 3 divers, 1 pilot, 1 chrono.
I prefer dive watches to any other variant.
