There's been a lot of discussion about the Everest hands, some saying they're too short and some that they're too long. I asked my manufacturer to take a close look at the hands and he sent me this graphic.
It's clear from this that the seconds and minute hands need to be a touch longer, the hour hand is the correct length but need to be fatter.

Or... leave it as it is because it's a Smith's Everest and not a 1:1 copy of an old Explorer.
I think it looks fine in its current incarnation

I like mine as they are!
As others have said - it has its own identity as it is. And you’d need about 10 different variations to meet each suggestions that has been made!

Eddie,
Thank you very much for the update; that looks *a lot* better and I agree with the fatter hour hand - a much more balanced feel to the hands.
Having tweaked the hour hand, I’m not sure the minute hand actually needs anything. If you do extend the minute hand, I wouldn't go further than half way out along the minute marks.

They look great the way they are. Is it really necessary to tweak them? Unless you’re going for a direct facsimile of the Rolex handset I don’t see any reason to make the change.

I think the old ones looked OK, but if I was to change I`d go for the length of the old minute and second hands but with the extra girth......if that makes sense!
I only undertook this exercise because of repeated posts expressing dissatisfaction with the hands and now everybody is saying "leave them as they are". Why bother criticising them in the first place?

So I have a Smiths Everest MkIII "slim hour". Noice
Seeing them side by side in Eddie’s image above, the current skinny hour hand looks better than the fat one. I do not think balance or proportion necessarily mean that the hour and minute hands should be the same width, just as they are obviously not the same length. The current differences are complimentary and visually compelling.
I’m happy with the handset on the new logo version which I’m waiting to receive. As folk have said it stands on its own. But if the complaint is about wanting fidelity to the Rolex handset then on the potential update the ‘point at the end of the Mercedes is not pointy enough. The base of the triangle looks like it needs to be 1/3 of one of the pie slices on the Mercedes, and the lollipop on the second hand needs to be slightly towards the centre so it’s outer edge hits the red circle on the render, and aligns with the tip of the hour hand.
But pedantry aside, for me if any changes were made to the current handset a counterbalance on the second hand would be more of a significant change to the overall aesthetic in my view, and might convince me to buy a third version of this great watch. Until then I eagerly await the arrival of the ‘boobies’ logo version.
If it is possible to buy spare sets of the latest hands as used in both the black and white dialled "Tits" logos currently on sale, then I would be interested in a set of each. Thanks !
I think being fully content with something is not what some people are looking for in their horology.
For the record I love my PRS-29AM and wouldn't change a thing.
Things will now stay as they are.

Hoorah! No more Everest hands posts!

FWIW I think that the 'new' hands version looks way better
Strange eh! I prefer the new ones, improvement on every iteration

In the absence of the re-balanced hands, fingers crossed for the Gurkha/Commando watch.
Tempus non expectat virum et aestus.
Well worth a view (or should that be watch?). Just up on YouTube: an ‘ID Guy’ review of the Rolex Explorer 214270, featuring the Smiths Everest. And I must say that the Smiths is by far the prettier watch of the two.

[QUOTE=fm.tz;5544823] It seems the critics haven’t logged on yet!
The ‘fat’ hour hand looks so much better.
Well worth the effort.
I agree, thank you Eddie, now the watch is perfection,"fat" hands are making the whole watch much more balanced and whole, in my eyes.
But those are details that we all feel good being a part of, I would buy Everest as it is right now or if you make any changes, it doesn't matter, my experience with your watches is just outstanding and I will wait for the next time a bach comes to try to be lucky inside those five minutes : )
Cheers,
Alex

I for one like the "new" hand style. The proportions fit a lot better into the dial.
Yes, it's a 1to1 Rolex copy. But who are we kidding here, it already was (nothing wrong with that imho).
BUUUT: Is that a new, non fake-rivet, end link style I see?! Finally!
Hi Eddie, nothing wrong with the current model it really comes down to individual preferences, I like the new iteration with the hour hand adding more girth to it, the minutes hand probably can stay.
Everyone each to their own but my pick will be the new hands, hope you do consider the new hands option in your next release :)
Or even better have both options available for Smith's fans to choose haha....
For what it's worth, I think the current iteration of the Everest is beautiful. I never owned the version with simply the Smiths text so take this with a grain of salt. My two suggestions would be to
- Fatten the hour hand to match the minute hand.
- Increase the logo EVER SO SLIGHTLY. It feels just a bit small. You can see on the Rolex that the third line adds balance.
My two cents.
An example of totally unbalanced hands. Don’t worry, I’ll take it

Spotted in a shop window last week.

Point taken.
Then perhaps my second point regarding the balance on the dial. A possible solution is to increase the size of the text ever so slightly.
At the risk of annoying people by being slightly off topic (though in my defence it is about Everest hands - just a different Everest), I bought what I thought was my perfect watch from Eddie, the Everest Expedition, only to find the skinny minute hand felt out of balance with the hour hand (I know this detail is correct compared to the 1953 vintage piece). For me it just didn't look right, I couldn't unsee this, and I had to let it go. I'm still happy, as I have the brilliant PRS29a - but I would love the Expedition with a slightly fatter minute hand as everything else felt exactly right on that gorgeous watch.
While I see your point, I'm more forgiving of the Explorer as it's a re-issue of an original watch (the A454), which had a similar hand design. Whereas the Everest is a new watch (albeit with a lot of 1016 design cues) and so, I feel, has more leeway in its hand styling.

As I own an Explorer, I am of course biased!
