What was your first ride? (auto) (WARNING-pimptastic photos)

A thread on the watch forum about a very blinged out (ghastly) Rolex and a pimpmobile lead me to post this topic here. We have had topics on what you're driving now, but it would be fun to see what people drove as their first car.
    I submit mine below.
    My first car:

This car was a real boat. Huge, Wire wheels, whitewalls, extra chrome, custom pleather bench seats, bumper guards, 400 V8, oh my! I can still feel the rumble... The front seat was so big, you didn't even have to move to the back  , unless of course you wanted some extra leverage. It was a motel on wheels. In retrospect, I was a bit of what would now be called a "Playa". A white playa from CT, but a playa none the less.

This is what big American cars were all about. I think it got 8 mpg. I'm still pissed that my parents sold it (after a decade of it collecting dust in the garage). I would love to fix it up now. It is a real American classic.
Now don't be a playa hater!

    What was your first ride?

    Regards,

Mine was a 1979 Dodge Aspen two door. It had a 225 slant six, was painted metallic shit brown, and I was definately not a playa.

I did a google image search and found a fully restored one here. Mine was never in this kind of shape.

My first car? An Austin A35. Cost me all of £30 to buy and £60 to insure - and that was only 3rd Party Fire & Theft :!:

Great car, lots of happy memories. :D

Re: What was your first ride? (auto) (WARNING-pimptastic photos)

My first car was a 1982(?) Peugeot 104S, gold coloured. Bought it in 1991 after my military service when I got my first 'real' job. Looked like greenhouse on wheels due to its unproportional large windows.

pictured borrowed from the net, without asking.

Bought it from a friend of my grandmother. Terms of payment and the price we agreed on turned into a circus.
Lessons learned: 1/ never buy a car from someone you know 2/ write a contract, with the price in print 3/ take the accessories with you at the time of the purchase.

The car served me well. I even bought a pair of yellow bulbs for the headlight since thats what French cars had in those days. Gave me many intresting moments, had great fun with it, and made come late to work a couple of times. The car did not like mornings with dew.

Strangely enough I did not buy my first car until 2002, took my driving test just before my 30th b'day in '96. Had no reason to drive .. either lived in city centres (including when abroad) or was at uni .. so my first car was one of these (pic stolen from the web):

    Renault Megane Cabriolet

My first car was a 1958 Volkswagen. I bought it for 300 Deutschmarks and it always was in very bad shape. But somehow it never broke down completely... 8)

First Car was a 1967 Morris Minor 2 door saloon, 1098cc in dove grey.
    :D

I still miss it and its great sounding exhaust note on decleration, fun handling in the wet,etc

but not how much money it cost me to keep it going every MOT on the Salt ridden roads.

Went to a nice home, occaisionaly see it being driven around, its in Mint condition now though.

Happy Days, 50K+ miles in my ownership and I only blew the engine up once and rebuilt it, but the front wheel's fell off on both sides ( on seperate occaisions) when cornering at low speed.

apart from that it was great.

1987 BMW E28 525e 2.7L straight-six automatic. Bought from my friend's dad for £700 two weeks after my 17th birthday. What a fantastic car that was, I have even been considering getting another one:

Re: What was your first ride? (auto) (WARNING-pimptastic photos)

First car I purchased was a 1966 Ford Mustang square back. It had a 289K engine going through a 3 speed manual. It had been highly modified by the previous owner and was a beast (notice the was). I purchased it at 14 and it spent a few years in pieces in the garage. She had a huge bulge in the hood for the 2 Holly 4 barrells that were on a custom intake manifold and was painted flat black. My brother wrecked her while I was away at OCS so I bought an MG to replace it. The first car I owned and actually drove was a 1972 Plymouth Duster with the slant 6 and olive green ugly as sin but it was cheap and I was 16. I got into a very bad accident in it and the insurance company totalled it but let me keep the car. Sold it to a friends dad who fixed it (sort of) then a few months later it caught fire and that was it for that car. Unfortunatly no pics of any of them.

One day I will have one of those.
But I will need to get a rented garage or something. SWMBO has stated that such a car will not be parked on our drive. Problems are ment to be solved.

Got my first car when I arrived in Canada it was a Mercury Cougar 1991.

I bought it from a friend who moved to Florida for $40 :D and never invested a penny in it. The RWD is a real drag in the winter and the brakes were failing so I avoided to use when was snow or ice. One day I was driving on a bridge and a truck driver talking on the cellphone decided to change the lanes and smashed me against the concrete wall. I was lucky for not driving a Yaris. :? The car went to scrap and it took me 3 years before buying another one.

My first car was a 1956 Chevy Coupe. Although I remember it fondly I now realize that without seat belts and brakes that were drums all around it was a death trap but I sure had a lot of fun with it.

A 1971 Triumph Spitfire in mustard yellow. In 1976, so it was 5 years old. Looked more like 25 years old, that being the glory days of British Leyland build quality. By the time I sold it six years later, it was almost entirely rust, with just a little paint on top. God I loved that car. :)

This is the closest Photo I could find - nice period costume too. :D

    That's sweet.
The only thing bigger than my old Monte Carlo was my Fathers old 1968 Lincoln Continental. Suicide doors! Sadly it did not earn a spot in the garage as my family got new cars and, exposed to the air near the ocean, it rusted away to undrivable in the mid 80's. That was one long car! It would be another great rebuild.
Photo from chromoclassico, originally from 1960's Lincoln ad. Ours looked just like the one in the photo.

My first ride was a Thwaites dumper. When only just 16, I was at a Civil Engineering college & we got to drive these when they were needed for the practical lessons (placing concrete etc.) Really fecked up my initial car driving lesson through as the dumper gear boxes all went from right to left in the gate as you change up

First car was an old HB Viva. 1100cc, no top coat of paint left on it, but it did me OK for my first year & fortunately I did get through my test 1st time.

Re: What was your first ride? (auto) (WARNING-pimptastic photos)

Took my driving test aged 21 years in 1968 a Gt Yarmouth Corporation Leyland bus http://www.britishmodelbuses.com/Real%2 ... _Large.jpg ... but the examiner said he would never let a driver without a car licence pass a PSV test (even though I passed) so he only let me pass to drive a car ... and said retake the PSV in six weeks after driving a car ... so I then drove my dad's Mercedes 220A http://www.motorbase.com/profiles/vehic ... =536595996 before retaking my PSV test ... after passing then drove these http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1142/113 ... 1187336111 three of the very few made Atlantean single deckers and these http://www.sct61.org.uk/gy52.htm almost as scarce Daimler Fleetlines ... then moved to Leatherhead where worked as a bus mechanic fixing and driving Routemasters like these http://www.busweb.co.uk/aecbus/pictures ... rtford.jpg and RF's and RT's like these http://www.countrybus.org/NF2005/RF383b.jpg and these http://farm1.static.flickr.com/52/20794 ... 1154868005 ... had to retake my PSV with London Country Bus Co. even though I was only employed as a mechanic and not a driver ... but also got to drive one of these http://www.countrybus.org.uk/GS/2tewin.jpg and these http://www.londonbuspage.com/JPGs/031005-PRES-rlh32.jpg latter is an RLH which was a LO-Decker so as to pass under low bridges ... they had bench seats on the upper deck ...

Didn't earn much ££ in those days (1970) until went on night shift at Leatherhead London Country Bus Garage where worked as a night chargehand ... we were paid very good bonuses based on manpower efficiency ie as nightshift staff were always in short supply the savings below budgeted payroll were bonus paid to the actual workforce ... I could earn well over £50 per week then (1970) which was well over the £15 per week earned as a driver in Gt Yarmouth.

And had my first decent watch then ... a JLC WWW which I did not realize then was a classic ... I threw it away a few years later when the hands fell off ... live and learn

After working "on the buses" I went to night school for a business studies course and then worked in Fenchurch St. in "the City" ... marine insurance broking and accountancy. But looking back the most satisfying job was on night shift in Leatherhead Bus Garage ... making sure that 70 vehicles were all prepared and repaired for service next day ... the most frequent repair job was punctures as it was policy then to use remould tyres and also to recut tyre treads ... I had to collect the tyre fitter from his house very morning at 4am and he would then inspect all the wheels/tyres and give me a list of those needing wheel changes ... which was no joke on a cold winter morning using jacks and an enormous socket wrench.

    Cheers

    One of these:

Green Mark 1 Scirocco 1.6GLi, 110 BHP, 750Kg (or thereabouts).

It was brilliant to drive (in the dry and when it worked!) and, at its best, would spin the tyres, in the dry, in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear.

NOT an ideal 1st drive - I was sooooooo lucky not to lose my licence (and probably more) with this car.

Re: What was your first ride? (auto) (WARNING-pimptastic photos)

C reg mini city was my first in old english white so it always looked dirty. I went mad and modified the engine which died, then got a metro gti engine in it and modded that as well. Ever since I have been addicted to 'fettling' cars i.e. improve whilst aiming to spend as little money as possible on the mods. The mini rusted to death after a couple of years, then I had a break and age 23 got a Saab 900 T16. Wasn't long before I learned how to tweak the electronic boost control then fitted my own design intercooler package and self made pipework, gave the car to my brother and again it died of rust. Next up at age 26 I got a Porsche 944 S2 which I still have but again it has some rust and needs work.

    To sum up;
    - I have never sold a car
    - I can't leave alone and have to tune cars, avoiding buying turbocharged cars worked for a while with the 944 S2 but I have promised my mate I will buy his 944 turbo and I fancy a Skyline R32 GTR.
    - All my cars eventually die of rust
    - none of the cars I have had what you could call pimptastic, but I was tempted at one point to get the most pimptastic thing to ever come out of germany, the MB 190 cosworth.

This was my First Car - a Vauxhall Viva HC in Pale Blue

I thought I was the King of the Road. It had the most modern of Luxury a Heated rear screen

This is a borrowed pic until I dig out a real one

After being a Lambretta scooter boy my first car was a Triumph herald like the one in the pic but in two tone blue.

Like the Lambrettas I liked the Italian styling.

    Cheers,
    Neil.
