    Playing with a new design

I've long been a fan of the art deco style and have tried to capture the style in this watch. The case is a 38mm carré case which is sculpted to be reminiscent of the old Odeon cinema buildings. It will have the Miyota 9039 movement (9015 without date) to make it as slim as possible, probably around 10mm.

The bezel and crown will be rose gold PVD and there will be no luminous whatsoever on the dial or hands. The leather strap will be chestnut brown and fitted with a rose gold PVD premium grade deployant clasp. It will have a view back.

    Should it go ahead?

It looks appealing overall. I’m not much for any pvd other than black, as it looks a cheap when it wears off (in my opinion). Would you consider bronze parts instead of pvd?

Love the art deco aesthetic but... would a small seconds / seconds sub-dial at 6 be out of the question? For me that, with the correct design, would push it over the top.
    Bronze would be amazing.

Really lovely, Eddie. I'm an art deco fan myself. Not had much experience on PVD, hopefully given where it is, it wouldn't be too prone to scratches or chips. I do like the idea of bronze too, watching the patina develop.

I've also asked the question whether real gold is possible for the bezel and crown.

Really like the case design, the crown guards almost match the lugs, which appeals to my mild OCD

Nice design. I think that the font is a bit light. You might look at a font that is more "jazz age", such as the following.

    Best wishes,

I say this as a fan of art deco but this is the first design of yours for ages that I'm not keen on plus I've always thought that art deco style watches should be rectangular or maybe tonneaus at a push.

  11. #11
I think case is too massive, some curves are odd, they make it look like cushion case which is quit not period correct.

Very attractive. Usual TF high legibility but with a less spartan/non military look.

    Playing with a new design

    It’s a yes from me.

I prefer the Ivory face and real gold would be tempting....

    Cheers,

I played a little with my limited photoshop skills on the left lug. I would make case rounder and make 2 step lugs that even might be bit longer.

I really like the look however, without wishing to ask too stupid a questions:

    1) Would a Sellita handwound SW210 be able to make it thinner?

    2) As I'm getting older and more myopic I'm not so sure about the no-lume. Is it not possible to get some rose-coloured superluminova and have the numbers and hands finished in that?

Or maybe lume the dial in off-white vintage lume? (Obviously wouldn't work for the black dial!!!)

Designs usually evolve. You start with the basic idea and then get a render to see how it works. You then play with a few tweaks until you're satisfied.

I am not sure if this is a watch for me, at this stage. However it looks much better, more balanced, without the crown guards.

With. Much more in the 'art deco' mood than without.

    Playing with a new design

Definitely with crown guards. Without it loses the odeon look and becomes a bit vanilla.

I wish there was some way of incorporating the vertical elements of the odeon design.

It's not for me but definitely with the crown guards, it is unbalanced without and loses much of the intended Deco feel.

This - I really love a bit of Art Deco and I think the crown guards suit the aesthetic really well. With the ivory dial and RG details I think this design is a winner.

FWIW, I also very much like the idea of putting a "step" into the lugs, that would look fantastic.

WITH - is far more deco, unique and beautifully asymmetric.
And no brass bronze or whatnot please just the rose gold bezel and crown (and maybe indices) and steel case.

Good looking watch. But gold plating is kinda naff.

Wouldn't a copper dial be better if looking for a large amount of gold(ish) area?

Or as someone mentioned before, use bronze instead of gold plating for the bezel, or even a bronze watch with a SS bezel.

If you could do that and have a Swiss movement this watch would be very nice indeed.

You've produced plenty of "affordables" recently with more to come. Maybe this could be a slightly more upmarket piece.
