You make that sound like a bad thing.

People often ask if they can smell my car interior; more likely they ask if their children can smell what cars used to smell like.

Clean the carpets thoroughly with a wet and dry vac, that'll get plenty of muck out.

Take the dead body out of the boot ?

For a truly authentic 1970s smell, try one of these...

Detailers use ozone generators (can be rented approx 40 pounds/day). Or at a lower level, just some Febreeze?

A bowl of lemon slices with two tablespoons of table salt and three tablespoons of Bicarbonate of Soda.

Leave for as long as you can.

HonestJohn always recommends leaving a bowl of white vinegar in the car overnight.

My local VW garage has a mid 70s Beetle in the showroom, I opened it up when my car was in for a MOT and it smelt EXACTLY like my first Beetle did when I had one as a first car in 1987, instantly took me back... Nostalgia is a powerful thing
    Cheers..

A pot of Neutradol in the rear seat door pocket should neutralise nasty niffs.

I have never tried it but I know an old trick in the Netherlands is strewing filter coffee in the car. On the seats, in the trunk and on the floor. Leave it there for a few days and just use your vacuum cleaner to get it out.

Of course you should use unused (dry) coffee ;-)

Why would you want your car to smell like coffee?
I love old car smell so much more authentic than new plastic car smell

a good vac out wipe it all down with soapy water fairy liquid and leave the windows down for a week, then dry the lot with your wifes hair drier if its rained in between times and the cars been left outside. Either that or leave a wet dog in that will mask the old car smell.

change the cabin air filter if it has one.
you can get 'smoke bomb' type 'fresheners' which might help - be careful though as some will leave marks - read the reviews.
Get the carpets steam cleaned professionally.

Use a wet carpet cleaner on the carpets and seats if they are upholstery. Do the roof as well if you can.

Change the cabin/pollen filter. Then use an air cleaner “bomb”. Its an aerosol can which you let off inside the car whilst the air con is running. You can get some that are antibacterial and will also clean the ac system too.

    Try this.....

    https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?m...2F322463554312

    You’ll find a few “flavours”
They are recommended by retailers and the camel really does stay in the car for a very long time per squirt

I’d avoid wetting anything in the car tbh
Maybe try and steam at most
But wet carpets don’t sound healthy for steaming up etc

Interestingly I read once that the sense of smell is the one that last/imprints on our minds the most.

    Could well be true.

It certainly seems to be for me.

The old '1970's car smell' makes me feel instantly sick whenever I smell it now. I used to be terribly car-sick when I was a kid and the smell takes me straight back there even now.

I feel quite queezy even writing about the smell.

I always assumed it was from the acres of plastic trim and seating!

    Yup. That's the smell!

I remember the results of my 'car travel affliction' were very hard to remove successfully from the textured vinyl rear seats of the various Capri's and the luxurious brown velour of the Cortina.

Always used to give me a headache, but probably because I put so many holes in the back with the pin because I didn't think I could smell it...

The smell of this forever reminds me of decaying flesh to the extent that the two have become identical in my mind.... also the scent of slightly rotten oranges.

I agree. I think most old british sports cars smell pretty similar. Worn leather, moldy wool and oil. Love it.

old car smell how to remove ?

I had a bag of garden waste (that had sat in the sun a week or two) leak in the boot on the way to the tip. It stank.
This was the only stuff I found to finally get it out. AC bombs and wet vac with shampoo etc it just kept returning.

    Hey,
I had a 19-year-old car that was never detailed. I had a bucket of fishing minnows tip over under the front seat years ago. I smoked in it all those years. It was a stick shift. I buy a vacuum system for my garage, based on this review https://cleanersexpert.com/best-gara...vacuum-system/ Solved my problem.

After reading this thread Carpet cleaner recommendations please, I bought a Bissell lift off. I've cleaned a couple of old cars seats and carpets with it and they smell really fresh afterwards. The machine handy for the house too and proved itself after a couple of red wine spillages onto wool carpets!

I’ve been researching these as I’m redeveloping a semi-basement level former bar into an office which had been closed up for years and we need to get rid of the dank, mouldy smell. Obviously we’re sorting out ventilation but having looked on eBay there’s a huge selection of ozone generators in the £50-150 price bracket. I’ve ordered one for less than 100 quid- to be honest it seems pointless hiring one.
