I just take my G -Shock , the nice stuff stays in the safe
So, I'm off to Brazil this month for holiday. I'm umming and arring as to whether to take my GS with me along with my G-Shock, or just the G-Shock. I'm not worried about street robbery and most of my time will be on a small island off the coast of Bahia, but more about leaving it unattended when I'm not wearing it.
What do most here do when going on holiday somewhere in a similar situation?

I can look after it for you
Seriously, I never take any of my good watches away, there's no point. I normally make do with a cheapy quartz, as long as it's waterproof.

I normally take a nice watch along with a beater if there is a safe to keep it in, I personally would even if there wasn't a safe but Mrs C can't handle the thought of being robbed!! This time I have taken just one seiko diver with about 10 different NATO straps and I'm quite liking it... but I do also miss having another with me, I don't usually wear one watch for 10 days straight.

One on the wrist, with another in your pocket. Problem solved. No need to use an insecure safe in a hotel room or apartment.
The fact that you're worrying about it before you've even arrived, means you should leave it at home. It's holiday, just enjoy yourself and avoid worries!
Think I'll head the advice and just take the G-Shock!
Thanks for the replies.

I go to France and don't worry what I wear but anywhere else...

Brazil, expensive watch? Definitely not. I know, I worked there for many years.
G-Shock all the way ....just not worth the risk

Under no circumstances take the GS. I know Brazil well. Bahia in general and Salvador specifically are certainly safer than Rio or Sao Paulo but as a foreigner wearing what looks like a good watch there is a good chance of being targeted.
I always take whatever watch I want away with me. I've never worried about it... sounds like you all think I should change that philosophy?
Has anyone on here actually had their watch stolen on holiday?

Does it need one?
I wouldn't take one of my more valuable watches on holiday. They stay at home in the safe. I invariably view a holiday as an excuse for a new inexpensive watch anyway.
I always wear the watch I want wherever I go.
I assume you have insurance cover should the worst happen?
Having said that, I have not been to South America so maybe not best person to comment on safety out there.
I have spent quite a bit of time in Brazil and have never taken any watch costing more than a Seiko SKX007.
Brazil is an amazing country just go and leave the watch at home.
I would make the decision based on which watch that you would be happy and comfortable wearing all day.
That includes swimming, trekking, shopping, eating and reading etc etc.
If its likely to sit by the bedside table or in the safe for longer period then whats the point of taking it?
I went with my Bremont S300 on a recent family summer break and with a rubber strap and relatively lightweight case it worked really well.
I have traveled to some more sketchy places in the world and I tend to wear something lower value if I'm worried about it. In the Costa Blanca I'll wear anything, in Honduras probably best to stick to something that looks plastic.
Lots of crime in Brazil I would leave my watch at home. Tourists are always a target..
The north east of Brazil is the best part of the country in my books and far, far safer than Rio / SP. But, like most parts, security is getting worse and you have to keep your wits about you. Taking an expensive watch is just tempting fate.
I'm very envious btw, wonderful part of the world!
Here's one example, it's not so much the loss of the watch but the whole experience can ruin your break so best to avoid being a target. Obviously this doesn't apply to all destinations but in some parts of the world there's a chance you'll end up in hospital to boot. Large chunks of South America are relatively safe and I'll happily wear any watch, but there are places I'll only take a cheap Casio.

I'll take one watch (and a few straps) that will work in all situations on holiday then leave it on my wrist for the week. Last time I went away the Legend diver ticked all the boxes.
