If you could only own and wear one watch for the rest of your life, which one would you choose?
For me it would probably be a stainless steel Rolex datejust, quite simple, but appropriate for most things.
Explorer.
Note this has been done a few times before.... as with most things.
How come nobody ever thought about starting such a thread? Thank you so much for raising the question, Dick.
This is my watch for life:
Someone who lies about the little things will lie about the big things too.
Timex weekender
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.
Easy a PPN
Rolex GMT BLNR for me. Has all the functionality I'm likely to need, it's tough, waterproof, and it can be worn with a suit if needed.
I'm tempted to say an apple watch (or android equivalent) as it's my daily driver but any watch with a battery (especially a smartwatch with an accelerated charging cycle) is a no-no really as a 'watch for life' - even though it will do pretty much anything you want (gmt? sure, world time? no problem, moonphase? there's an app for that... and so on).
I'd love to say a Rolex Pepsi GMT but it's just too expensive and attractive to na'er do wells to be worn at all times.
It would have to be something like a Tudor GMT or a Ball or Longines Worldtime - for me 2nd / multiple time-zones are not only useful but also I find them rather evocative and something from a lower price marque means not only would I be more likely to wear it every day but I'd not be worried about the odd knock.
Actually a Grand Seiko diver / GMT ticks all the boxes too along with boosted WIS cachet but i'd be more concerned with bashing it.
Datejust with plain bezel. It does what it says on the tin.
Swap the "Dutch" for Head, Dick.
Got a new watch, divers watch it is, had to drown the bastard to get it!
Thanks. I'm glad that some of you entered into the spirit of it, I realise that the subject might have been covered, but as a new member, maybe I'm interested in other peoples ideas, especially those that haven't been around for ages.

Why? Was there any need for this?
If I can find one at a reasonable price it will be a Seiko 'Steve Jobs'....
Ginault ocean rover no date. Comfy, robust, versatile re straps, affordable, accurate.
What a great topic thanks Dick
A good choice, which must fit your requirements for 'the one'.
Think of it like the choice of person you marry though, you get one choice, you make that choice without a full and detailed knowledge of what your buying into, and you'd better hope it's the correct or things will end up very expensive.
I look at it this way:
A chap can only wear one piece of 'jewelery' and since we all either have a suit and tie on or mufty clothes for work, that piece of jewelery says an awful lot to people about what you are. The style, brand, design etc and how other people perceive them are therefore important.
You want it to still look good in 20+ years time (snigger, bit life the wife). Rolex datejust fits the bill, as does the Speedmaster and some left of field watches like the Cartier tank. So choosing something that is not the current must have fashion is equally important.
You want it to be well engineered and built so it'll last and still work to specification in 20+ years. (snigger, no saggy bottoms please).
You want it to be something that you are not just happy to put on every day for those next 20+ years, but that you love to put on, take pride in and are absolutely certain that you'll be handing on to your son as and when the time comes.
Those are my requirements. Mickey mouse watch might be 'it' for some people as might an all black Hublot, but as we're all individuals I wouldn't ever dispute their choice. I might snigger to myself though.
Oh dear.

Always annoys me a little when I see 'WR' to xxx. Basically the company is saying it'll resist water to whatever depth but it's not actually waterproof to that depth. In other words, 'well only a bit of water got in so it resisted it quite well and therefore you've got to pay for a repair'.

But then I have only been wearing my yellow one for a few days, this will do me nicely I think

Same answer as every time this question is asked for me. Search facility is a great resource.
It's just a matter of time...
Omega SMPc chronograph 2599.80.00. This watch was excellent over 20 years ago and is still excellent doing it's thing in all situations.
If I could have only one I would be keeping this one.
(I would post a picture but it is a pain having to re-size each time, too much of a faff. No other site I use has this issue, shame.)

Probably a 5146.
More realistically, my BLNR.
Rolex 14060
Casio G-Shock GW-M5600 (got it before the 6 band upgrade) always spot on and not a large profile.
Rolex Datejust 1600 on oyster bracelet. This one in fact.
Daytona 116520. Both dressy and sporty

SKX007 would be my choice.
Rolex 14060m for me.
My Submariner 114060 or Speedmaster Moonwatch. Boringly obvious answer, admittedly, but then they are pretty much perfect to me, and in addition I have great personal attachment to them.
Where's the "Not this Sh*t again" meme with Jean Luc Picard, when you need it?
