Good story and nice watch. I hope the owner is happy. How long did the whole process take?
A member on SCWF. Possibly here, too, sent me this 6309 to see if I could sort the hands and dial lume as it was rough, and unfortunately had suffered from moisture causing the blackening to the nickel plating. The lume looked too raised to be original. I think it was probably layered on top? There is aswell a large scratch on the dial, which to be fair isn't too noticable. One more sign someone had been inside this previously, a hair wrapped around the hour wheel, too.
The watch wasn't running great, low amplitude and I didn't like the idea of sending it back like that. The insert was missing its pip and lume aswell. I hoped I'd be able to sort it somewhat. The glow wasn't important, just needed to tidy it up a little.
Here is the picture I received a good few months ago now. I'm Slowly getting into the swing of things again and here is one I needed to tackle first, so for those reading this with watches with me, I am on a mission.
Stripping the movement, I noticed it was quite dirty.
Escape showing some crud here.
Framework again, slightly dirty with old.
Same with the train bridge.
CW bridge.
Quite liked this pic.
Everything ready to clean.
Starting with the rebuild, the mainspring barrel cleaned and lubricated.
On with the keyless.
CW bridge about to be screwed into place.
Barrel and click installed and positioned to allow the train bridge installation.
Side view showing the pivots.
Train bridge installed.
Pallet and balance installed after lubricating the pallet stones and running the movement to coat the escape.
Calendar side. The day and date wheel had the odd sign of grease or tanning, both cleaned up well.
Reading after 12 hours.
Dips to 216 and -17 spd in various positions. So I'm happy with that I think. Will regulate it slightly faster in dial dow/up to compensate here and keep an eye it.
Relumed the dial and cleaned the hands and installed a spare bezel pip and lumed that slightly more tanned.
I would have liked to do better on the dial lume. But I think I'm content with it as it is. I was restricted by the texture of what was already there and as I believed it may well have already been relumed in the past, from experience I don't want to attempt to remove too much as it can bring up the painted plots underneath, which I would always like to avoid....
Removing previous relume is never good fun.
Anyway...
I did try some NOS hands, but I feel the originals now cleaned and relumed, look more in keeping and suit the watch. Yes they show their wear, but an improvement. Plus the glow is far too bright so would have to remove the lume on the new ones. Don't really wanna do that, but what do you think?
NOS hands:
I like it back with the original, relumed hands. ALso replaced the crystal with an original with only slight wear. The one that was on it seemed plasticy and not the correct profile and no frosted edge.
Fingers crossed the owner is happy. If not I'll have to do it again...

Fantastic job. I definitely agree about the hands, they have cleaned up great sure they owner will love it.
Great post and if you're on a mission, it would be good to see more.

Good work Guy, always enjoy seeing these write-ups
Great job Bodo, the lume looks good to my eyes!
Reminds me of my own 6309 restoration project!!
All it needs now is a slightly less worn bezel insert, more in keeping with the dial & hands.
The owner will be chuffed I'm sure.
Thanks all. Yeh thinking of sticking a new insert in. Kind o did my self an injury tonight and have been at hospital. Nothing too serious but possible nerve damage on a finger. What joy.
Anyway will see about sticking a new insert on and posting a pic if I get a chance.
Thanks Sammy. Yeh I don't think it's too bad but find out tomorrow. Getting some strange pains down the wrist which is rather unsettling..

Great write up, and super job - hands are excellent! Your own hands however....ouch! Hope accident wasn't too bad, and healing soon.
Great write up and pictures. And a great outcome. Is this a hobby or vocation?

Great to see what goes on inside a watch and the skill it takes to service/restore one. Hope all's ok with your hand.
