Definitely buy used if you don't want to take too much of a loss.
Frustratingly awaiting a new SS Daytona but I wondered if anyone has an opinion on A Lange & Sohne watches ??
Obviously not comparing the two but I do love the look of these.
Any experiences, views or observations appreciated ....
.... do they hold their money or are used a better buy ?

Cheers, they are very pricey but second hand are more accessible

ALS are stunning watches.
What model were you looking at as an alternative to the Daytona ?
Unsure if ALS are alternative as such but seen a nice Saxo mat Langmatik at £11.5k

Lovely, really classy watches; my favourite is the 1815 up-down. Grey discounts are ok, but just ok. About ten to fifteen per cent on average. I have a Daytona, and fine watch that it is, it is no rival to ALS. And isn't intended to be at a fraction of the price.
You would ideally own both; ideally.
I cannot see the Datograph as an alternative to the Daytona.
If only you could swap a Daytona for a Dato! I'd be a very happy man
Thanks

I love ALS. I own both a patek and lange but in terms of finishing of the actual movement? Lange has the upper hand.
My 1815 chronograph.

I love ALS, but it seems like they're always a little more slab sided and thick than I would prefer. I feel the same about GO.
They just about tell the time.
Beautiful, thanks for sharing
I love the simplicity and lines of ALS

Am seriously considering the purchase of a Zeitwerk, to me ALS make some of the finest finished watches in the business. As to holding there value they are better than some in that category for the simple fact not many are produced. My opinion is such one has to think seriously when purchasing such a watch and not rush into it as in reality has to be purchased with a view that you can afford never to sell it.
I wouldn't dissuade you from buying a second hand Lange, but don't buy one because your frustrated on waiting for the Daytona. Personally I would buy a stainless zenith Daytona IMHO these offer far greater value long term than the modern steel equivalent and they are available in the U.K. On Chrono 24.
Thank Geoff, agreed
I need patience

I love ALS, but something simple like the Saxonia 35mm. Would have one over a Patek or precious metal Rolex any day. Value retention probably not at Rolex levels, but I would have it for life. Realistically, not much prospect until I get my retirement lump sum, and that's a way off :(

For me personally I would have a ALS over any rolex, but one has to think very carefully when making such purchases. If I was in any doubt I would not do it Lange is sheer class, I will alway continue to love and own patek and still continue to cherish my Rolex pieces. I don't think I have seen a single ALS that I don't love one of the classiest is the simple 1815 up down just stunning.
The saxonia is lovely maybe a bit small for me but so classy, yes so much nicer than any Rolex. S/H values not as bad as I thought just because not so many around I suppose not in the same league as Rolex but what is but still good. As you say you really have to buy one for life and only buy if one can afford to do so.
The new black dial 1815 is lovely - https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/a-...ith-black-dial
Personally a ALS every day over a Daytona, that's what I would do if I had that kinda money to spend on a watch
Ok but an Als and daytona are completely different things. You can't forexample swim with an ALS ( i own both). ALS is much more "art" and "tradition" than simply a wrist watch. It's one of those things that gives you pleasure of owning one even if you don't wear it often.

Not sure any potential buyers would be comparing Rolex to ALS as the two brands are very different.
Personally i would have both if I could, they are so different, I think the Lange is more of a work of art a stunning thing. The rolex is certainly a lovely thing in its own way plus reasonable service costs high resale values are a definite positives. At the end of the day we are lucky there is so much choice so we make up our own minds to what works for us.
A Rolex works as daily beater, an ALS or PP for sure not... These are collection watches, not for living with you...
Sure I'd love to have an ALS or PP in my collection! But this will never happen. The daily beater happened in form of an Explorer

I've always loved the '1', which is a catchy name. I just love the separate dials within the one face, very elegant and unmistakable. The attention to detail goes beyond that of most peoples' idea of what attention to detail actually is.
This is the 1 in platinum (101.035). Price for this used one is £23k. That's a lot for any watch.
And I would also prefer a patek over a Garmin anyday, even to the gym!

It all depends.
I have worn my platinum Datograph a lot, mostly with jeans and t-shirt. Suppose 99.9% of people have absolutely no idea what I am wearing and that is fine with me. I have some gold watches, and as much as I like to wear one every now and then, they do get noticed and oftentimes I don't wear them just because I don't want them to get noticed.
Someone who lies about the little things will lie about the big things too.
Damn love the datograph. it is the chronograph of the 21st century. The icon and face of ALS.

Personally, a chrono from them is my grail, but I couldn't see it being an everyday watch like something more sporty... I'd love to see what they could do with the sports watch concept!
