Subconsciously maybe but consciously no . having said that if i like the look of it i like the look of it .
Just wondering what others think.
I've been watching "billions" and found myself finding Bobby axelrods (Damien Lewis?) cartier roadster very cool and increasingly desirable as the series continues.
The above itself might be fairly normal but the reason I've found myself asking is that a client wears one and I admired but never really liked it. Now I'm lusting for one alongside others I've wanted for last few years.
Anybody else find themselves in a similar position.
Eta just watched "gold diggers" on TV tonight and one of the guys being milked was wearing one. Not so cool watch now lol
Subconsciously maybe but consciously no . having said that if i like the look of it i like the look of it .
Might of had some impact when I was a teenager. Now I can't help but laugh a little at grown men fawning over things because they were worn by fictional characters. The most hilarious case being all the man-love expressed for Bond tie-ins around some parts of the watch world.
In a word-No.
Having said that there ARE some rare models linked to a fictional character, that are very nice. The latest example being Omega Spectre- lovely watch all around.
While I tend not to be influenced by stars/celebrtiies in my watch choice, I neither denounce or look down upon anyone who is. It is only natural and that is the reason companies pay big bucks.
I do look upon bemusedly at people who get their knickers in a twist over Bond watches or try to make light of it. There is a word for them- losers.
Media whore that I am, yes. Well, once.
Bought a Breitling Chrono Avenger after seeing Leo sporting one in Blood Diamond
I'm trying to figure out what watch would make Charlize Theron want to hop in bed with me. Is that what you're asking?
I only wear Brad Pitt approved watches.
As much as I hate to admit it,,, yes.
Saw Thunderball at about 8 yrs old, first style divers watch around 12 years old, Submariner at 27 years old.
Given that we live 80 miles or so from the coast and have no maritime connection, I can only concluded the influence of the film, as I've said before its the only Rolex I've ever hung on to and it still makes me smile, c'est la vie.
I really wish that Eddie would bring back the NO smiley.
F.T.F.A.
If I see an interesting watch model on screen, on telly, on the street or down the pub I'll investigative it and might even buy one, but I don't believe the character wearing it makes me want it more or less.
That said, I'm sure we've all had an ex-boss or someone we didn't like much who wore a Rolex/Breitling/Tag or who drove an Audi/Mercedes/BMW and it put us off those brands for life! :-)
SGR
It's always nice to see a watch but person X wearing brand Y wouldn't make me buy it. Pierce Brosnan wore a lovely Reverso in Thomas Crown Affair
DEFINATELY NOT.
I buy what I like, and not what some celeb has been given and then paid a huge sum to wear it in an advertising pic!.

Not because of their celebrity, but there have been watches that I've not particularly cared for when I've only ever seen them in manufacturer catalogues, blogs and maybe the odd wrist shot or shop window. But then seeing them worn in context over time by an actor in a film or TV has given me an idea of how they'd work in the real world and I've decided I like the look.
Willard's 6105 was an influence on my long vintage Seiko phase.
If ever found out what Harry Palmer wore I would have had that as well, but then I love The Ipcress File too.
The Bond obsession - and I'm thinking particularly of the analysis of that NATO- really baffles me.
Unless astronauts. Then yes, it doesn't matter what they're wearing; I want one.
Sometimes the opposite. You like a watch for ages and then you see the "wrong" celebrities starting to wear it..... . Panerai comes to mind...
I dont think so
Cant think of an actor that wears the sort of things that I am interested in these days
The James Bond character might have had some influence in the past though
NASA has probably had more of an impact on me
id like to think it doesnt but a few have got me looking at watches i dont normally lust after
Axelrod in billions and John travolta in the OJ series (gold daytona)
Every time one of my sons plays the dvd London Boulevard with Colin Farrell wearing an Omega Railmaster 39mm i wish i had bought one before they became so rare, sought after and pricey
Not necessarily screen stars, who wear flashy things like Hublots that are way out of my budget, but the watches you see on TV can influence your desires - you can see if something looks good. I remember that my love of Panda black dial / white subdial watches was sparked by a TV presenter who wore one - I thought 'that looks great'. I think his watch was a Breitling - can't afford one of those, though I have had several cheaper versions!
Steve McQueen.
I'd be lying if I didn't admit it
Perhaps sub-consciously. Although I haven't bought anything seen in film / on TV yet...
Nope, but I have been seriously distracted in films trying to identify an on-screen watch .....
Definitely .............. I'd avoid any 007 related Omega
If by screen stars you mean astronauts, then yes.
Edit also early James Bond.
So yes.
Bizarrely, yes, and the type of watch I can't stand! Although not bought it.
Light/white dial, over-engineered shiny bracelet and probably a fashion brand.
And of all shows - Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead.
I hang my head in shame.
Not really, but Beckham wearing a Breitling just isn't cricket.
I bought a Seamaster to be like Brosnan's James Bond (at uni) - it didn't work :/
Only recent watch I can say I've 'noticed' is Kevin Spacey's IWC in House of Cards... But not because I wish to be like him; it just a nice watch.
I've been tempted by an onscreen watch once, at least a watch I wasn't already aware of, though I only found out what it was recently and I doubt I'll ever be able to find one, it was an Alsta Nautoscaph.
I'm sure you can all guess the film/character?
Worn & Wound did an article on it in their Watches Of The Screen section.
Just because screen stars, either in publicity shots or on screen are wearing one = never.
That would be like buying a Rolex because it's a Rolex and not liking the actual watch itself (i'm sure a few people have does just that)
But the use of the celebrity media does bring certain models / brands to attention.
So seeing a person in the public eye wearing something in particular, finding out what it it, finding one, then if I like it, then yes why not.

Nope. But that's only because I've never seen a screen star wearing a Grand Seiko.
Nope. :O))
I don't want to hijack the thread so I'll just point you here :

I am not in the slightest bit interested in who wears what, so no from me.
I do, however, get very influenced by much of the amazing photography that crops up on the forums. That is my downfall.
Not in the slightest unless it's a cartoon character and an astronaut... Then it's still out of my reach.
Whenever this question comes up, you will see a lot of people denying that they've ever been influenced by anything whatsoever in the entire history of the universe. And yet everyone seems to like Subs and Speedmasters, nothing whatsoever to do with seeing them on the wrists of Sean Connery and Neil Armstong as a child, I'm sure!
I'm no different in not wanting to appear impressionable - I like the blue Omega AT, which looks great on Daniel Craig, but I wouldn't like to look like I bought one for that reason, so it slightly put me off in the end, which is probably just as daft!
No.....
On second thoughts, those awful Breitling print ads / posters with John Travolta would influence me (even further) not to buy their watches.

Ditto the Tag Heuer print ads / posters with Jenson Button etc "wearing" the watches on the outside of their fists FFS!

So yes, but it a negative way.

Whoever does not know how to hit the nail on the head should be asked not to hit it at all.
Friedrich Nietzsche
No, but am influenced by historical events.

Some watches look obvious props and character adornments to me. However, Tom Selleck, as Jesse Stone, carries off a vintage Rolex GMT Master with casual aplomb.
Sure.
The Sub worn by Bond first turned me on to the watches as a youngster.
Astronaut celebrities also turned my head to an interest in Speedmasters.
Cheers,
Neil.
No, not influenced by what actors have worn in films or TV, but as others have said I do have an interest in watches with historical connections like the space race. The Speedmaster limited editions like Apllo XI (35th), Gemini IV (blue dial) and of course the Apollo XIII Snoopy spring to mind.
