    Another car thread

How many of you change your car & buy the same make & model again?

I been thinking of changing my main car, as I like to do so every couple of years.

The thing is, having looked what's out there I'm tempted to change for the same car again but newer.

There's nothing wrong with my current one, I just like to keep it new despite the added depreciation.

My other half thinks it's strange & I should either try something different or stick with what I have if there's nothing wrong with it but my man logic says it's a normal thing to do!

I can't be the only one to do this, can I?

I've never had the same model twice, I like to try different things, not just an evolution of the same model. I like to try different marques too, I've had 1 x Toyota, 1 x MG, 3 x Fords, 1 x Renault, 1 x Peugeot, 2 x Fiats, 1 x BMW and 1 x Alfa Romeo.

Variety is the spice of life and all that, I'd never trade in one resale silver repmobile for a slightly younger resale silver repmobile, but then for me cars are a bit of a hobby and my commute to work is a chance to enjoy myself rather than just have a commute to work.

Edit: I'm guessing by your avatar we're not talking about resale silver repmobiles?

I've lost count of the number of 320d's I've had. Boring and practical but the weekend car is Cobra replica with SBC, thats the one I change if im bored.

Back in the 90's I had a BMW (E34) 5 series, a 525i, which I sold and and then "upgraded" to another E34 5 series but this time a 535i Sport. That was a really great car.

Had a few since then but been running an old Landcruiser for many years now, when that finally gives up the ghost will probably get another Landcruiser. Boring I know!

I bought my wife a new Nissan Qashqai+2 a few years ago. I have been impressed with it so much that I am going to buy myself one second hand as they stopped doing the +2 and 2l engine recently.

So it looks like I'm not alone in looking to replace like for like.

It's good to know it's not just me that does things like this & off car shopping I go.

My father used to replace his Ford Escort with a new Ford Escort every 3 years. Then the Focus came along and now its a new Focus every 3 years like clockwork. I find this so lacking in joy that it pains me but he and I have fundamentally different views about what a car is about. I've had 26 different cars in my 26 years of driving, all different apart from two 3 series BMWs (a 328is coupe and a 330d saloon).

I replaced my MX-5 with an MX-5, maybe you should... oh never mind...

Had a few 5 series, e34, e60 and currently f11. Same series but different cars, I just think they are great cars and each is just a step up (although the current one is let down by some cheap finishing such as all the door trims seem to be attached with pritt stick, the matts are 'held' with Velcro and the locking wheel bolts are made if cheese) great box and engine though.

Over the years Ive had 8 x Volvo 240's interspersed with FWD things of various sizes when I needed to economise or fancied a change

In fact, as I need an estate I am going to buy another - all being well tomorrow

    I love them

Here's a pic of one of the saloons - think I sold it around 2008

It's a ridiculous thing to do. You're throwing money away.

But clearly from the quote above, you know that. So why do it?

Well for the past 10 years I've bought a different car but kept the old one's if that helps.

Unlike many BMW drivers, or so it seems, I don't seek to maximise cost by selling a car bought new at the bottom of the steepest part of the depreciation curve ;).

Am on my third 3 series, after 25 years. Should be set for another 8-10 years still, before expenses become pricey.
...but what do I know; I don't even like watches!

Funny you should be starting this thread. Our X3 is getting on a bit. It took uns months to agree on it 5 years ago, and half a decade later there still sin't another car we'd both consider as a replacement. But I don't like the idea of spending money on getting the same, only newer. Oh well.

If its still the best option then change it for the same. No point in changing to for something that's worse.

So many cars and such little time. I just can't imagine sticking with one car or even one manufacturer unless I was 100% certain there was absolutely nothing else available that was better.

I do a lot of research to work out the best car, it takes months. Occasionally it's the same make but not often. Never buy with any brand loyalty, although some people have a good experience with a car and get blinkered into thinking nothing else is as good!

My wife loves her Golfs. She also likes to keep cars so the plan is to keep the current One for a while. If she did switch, it would almost certainly be a Golf at the top of the list though.

    I bought 5 BMW in a row, 2 5 series and 3 3 series.

I now drive a Mercedes. Can't see me going back to BMW in the short term.

Funds permitting i will go for a Tesla S next. Very cool car.

I'm on my second VW Touran, always liked Golfs so I stuck with VW and as I genuinely need a people carrier I can't think of another one I'd buy. I'm clearly not very 'into' cars as I'm perfectly happy with it. Had various Audi and Volvo estates in the past and this is better than all of them, drives like a hatch and masses of room with a higher driving position. I used to like cars but just can't be bothered with the costs of fancy cars, especially as I drive in London and getting out of 3rd gear is a novelty! I live I'm south west London where the streets are teeming with Range Rover Evoques and BMW M3's being driven at walking speed over speed bumps and down narrow roads, and even on the motorway my little 1.6 TDI Touran has enough power to cruise in 6th with enough power to overtake safely. IMHO cars are just a money pit, look great in the adverts etc - but all the macho talk of handling and torque, understeer and low down grunt etc doesn't bear any comparison to my average daily trip dodging white vans, watching for speed cameras, trying to find parking spaces wide enough to open the door and get out, and speed bumps that try to rearrange my suspension!

years ago I used to drive company cars. I had 3 Cavalier SRi's in succession. Then I ended up with a variety of Peugeots and such like because the company car policy eroded away what could be had.

Following that the company implemented a cash allowance and I bought myself a 525i BMW (E39). I ran that for 3 years and then bought a 530d (E61) and I ran that for 7 years. In that period I gave up the day job, started my own business and took some time to make that successful. Fast forward to now: A few months ago, but being a die hard BMW fan, I fancied a change. I really gave BMW a good look over but nothing really did it for me. So I bought myself a Jaguar XF Diesel S. A very different car to a BMW but a whole lot more unique. I love it to bits.

Now, I'm first to agree that cars are a huge money pit. The thing is though, I always buy my cars outright as I have no interest in being in debt for them. Perhaps not the wisest approach but one that works for me. So, I'm probably doubly reckless in some peoples eyes. However, I work hard and I can't take my money with me when I go and we are debt free. I don't have excessively expensive hobbies aside from cars and watches so why not ....

So, if you fancy the same again, have the same again. Don't assume that there is nothing else out there though... there always is, you just need to discover it and you may be surprised at what you find!

    Good luck.
