Very nice...I am a fan of the original and I was looking at the re-issue the other day and wondered how it measured up.
Food for thought.
...I've got a new watch! First in ages and the first actual new watch I've bought in years. As most of you know I'm primerally a vintage watch kinda guy.
Anyway here it is - the re-edition of the Bulova Snorkel.
Unfortunately it doesn't house the original Accutron calibre 2182 movement but the seconds hand does sweep, although at 16 beats per second rather than the original 300. Still looks pretty smooth to the naked eye though.
I do like the tuning fork emblem on the end of the seconds hand.
Plus, although it doesn't have the grey centre section to the dial, it does have a step and contrasting dial texture.
It has twin crowns. The one at 4 is screw down and sets the time and date. The one at 2 moves the internal bezel, which rotates smoothly.
The crystal is Bulovas equivalent to Seiko's Hardlex, so is inbetween mineral and sapphire. I like the dome of it I must say.
The case is well finished with a fine brushed top and sides contrasting with the polished shoulders. Although larger than the original at 43mm it sits comfortably on the wrist.
Overall I'm very happy with it, the only thing I've changed is the mesh bracelet for a strap.
And here's the original - photograph courtesy of pauljsned.
Cheers,
Gary

That is a very impressive watch. I like it.
That looks very nice indeed.. interesting..
Really like that. Congrats.
Does the internal bezel rotate in clicks or just freely? Does it go both ways? Do you have to pull the crown out to rotate it?
Sorry for all the questions! Genuinely interested.
Very tastefull retro I must say, and the strap suits it very well.
Your photgraphic skills do it a lot of good as well.
Daddel.
Got a new watch, divers watch it is, had to drown the bastard to get it!
Love it. And it's affordable as well. Win Win.
I may prove to be in the minority here - but I think that this is one of those times when a reissue actually looks better than the original.
Just more vivid and looks better-finished, yet keeps to the spirit of the original
If the current one, which looks great by the way, was anywhere near 666 ft WR Id have one.
It's just a matter of time...
Water resistant to 200m according to several reviews and watchshop's website.
The internal bezel rotates smoothly in either direction with no clicks. You don't have to pull the crown out to rotate it and it can be rotated with your fingertip.
Er it's water resistent to 200m or 654 feet in old money. Admittedly that's 12' short of the original but it's more than enough for us mere mortals imho.
Cheers,
Gary

Did you find it difficult getting used to a 43mm watch if you're more used to vintage pieces?
Not really but I do find myself becoming a bit more wrist conscious with larger watches and take a wide berth through doors etc. Vintage stuff I generally just wear and pretty much forget. Plus there's a lot of larger vintage watches out there, my old Speedmaster 125 was a brick of a thing!

Gary

I love that as well. Slightly outside my current budget though somewhat.
I'm seriously considering that Accutron though. I'm just worried about the 43mm size. My largest watch is a 42mm Steinhart OVM and it wears quite large on my girly wrists.
The new snorkel looks great, I think this colour version is the best of the bunch. The watch really suits the strap and looks fantastic on a mesh, I hope to get one in the future.
Enjoy.
Lovely watch Gary.
Thanks for all the positive comments guys, much appreciated as always
I've just checked the time keeing and after 54 hours it's absolutely spot on. Apparently it houses a modified precisionist movement and they're good for 10 seconds a year.
Cheers,
Gary
Thanks for the answers Gary.
Really like it and have added it to my want list
very nice,I'd been looking at this vintage piece which is a caravelle apparently, quite similar
Looks to be a good interpretation of the original Gary.
Nice looker!
Cheers,
Neil.
That's very nice.
Very nice indeed
I like this. It's available on Amazon for £265.50 on the mesh with free delivery - which I think is an attractive price.
Tempting...
Simon
The RRP is £399 for these but there's some good discounts out there. Mine came from H. S. Johnson through Amazon but I think they've run out of stock unfortunately.
Cheers,
Gary
Interesting review for a nice watch, thanks! One thing though the original Bulova TF movements "ticked" at 360Hz, it's the ESA F300 that ticked at 300Hz ;-)
You're absolutely right as always Mr G, I was thinking of the Omega f300 movements, d'oh!
A quick update. After a week the time keeping is still spot on. You can't here the movement but today I was playing a bit of guitar and noticed the tick coming through my amp. Oh and I've been experimenting with a couple of different straps, a Heritage Nato from Geckota and a Bonetto Cinturini rubber strap.
I like the orange in the Nato but love the fit and vanilla whiff of the Bonetto Cinturini. I've got one on my Seiko 009 and they seem pretty much indestructable.
Cheers,
Gary
The retro BC is a slightly thinner strap and really suits the watch, great choice.
