All on vinyl, of course:
Wishbone Ash - Live Dates
Free - The Best of Free
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin
Very quickly followed by
The Doors - The Best of the Doors
Pink Floyd - Meddle
Looks like I was into compilation albums back then. I never buy compilations now.
I just checked. I still have the Wishbone Ash, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Free albums. They must be amongst my oldest possessions. It must have been 72/73/74.
Rick Wakeman, Six Wives of Henry the 8th
The Planets, Gustav Holst
Pink Floyd, Dark Side...
I don't actually recall although I have a vague memory of buying 'Thriller' by Michael Jackson on tape. CDs - 'Blue Room' by the Orb (the full 39-minute version), 'Unplugged' by Eric Clapton and 'Amused to Death' by Roger Waters.
I think, what with memory being a bit hazy...
Ultravox - Vienna
Queen - The Works
Dire Straits - Brothers In Arms
although.......I was also into Deep Purple and Pink Floyd so it may just have easily have been Dark Side of the Moon,Wish You Were Here or a Deep Purple compilation.
Again, a bit vague.
Certainly nothing "cool", as my musical tastes at around 10 were pretty poppy.
First album was probably Parrallel Lines by Blondie (on tape), but I bought a few compilations of chart singles when I was that age (I think "Video Stars" was one). I even bought one of the "Top of the Pops" ones, which when I got it home I was horrified to discover didn't contain original recordings, but crap covers of recent chart songs!
Shortly after that I lived abroad where pirate tapes were what everyone bought (and very cheap), so added things like
Plastic Letters by Blondie
Vienna and Rage In Eden by Ultravox
Replicas, The Pleasue Principle and Telkon by Gary Numan/Tubeway Army
Peter Gabriel 3
I do know that the first singles I bought were
Cars by Gary Numan
Video Killed The Radio Star by Buggles
Someone's Looking At You by The Boomtown Rats
All vinyl which I still buy now:
Nation of Millions - Public Enemy
License to Ill - Beastie Boys
Straight Outta Compton - NWA
Thanks guys

I don't recall my first LPs or cassettes... But my first three cds were:
Anthrax: Sound Of White Noise
Pantera: Cowboys From Hell
Pantera: Vulgar Dispaly Of Power
Can't remember the subsequent ones but the first was Tarkus by ELP.
Quote " Again, a bit vague.

I think that Album was and still is the personification of cool, Blondie coming straight out of the New York sub culture and crossing over to the main stream and going supersonic with that album.
1972, aged 14, my first purchase was Led Zeppelin 111, closely followed by Zepellin 1V and Deep Purple's Machinehead.
Still like the Zeppelin albums but I don`t think the Deep Purple stuff has aged well.
