John Mayer talking about his watch collection.......

This video starts off somewhat inane-but then he starts to whip out an endless stream of amazing watches...

That was very enjoyable. The guy clearly "gets" it. And, as the interview unfolds, shows a genuine love for the watches he owns.

His comments from 4:40-5:15 are some of the most refreshing, down to earth things I have ever heard a crazy rich person say. He's a cool dude.

Thanks for posting the video. Play a few of his songs myself and never realised he was a watch man.

Not a fan of his music but what a nice, down to earth guy. Great collection of watches too. Especially the Daytona. Drool!

Very refreshing listening to someone who really appreciates them for what they are rather than just buying them because he can.

If you watch the 'Where the Light Is' video, you see him changing watches between sets, choosing from a rather impressive roll. (take a look here at 2'53").

He is an immensely talented guitarist, has a world class watch collection and shags supermodels. I can't help thinking that the bastard pushed in front of me in the queue when the lives were being handed out.

    :D

I think if he'd said that about something cheap & cheerful I'd agree .. but he talks about a pretty valuable IWC watch as if it's a Casio.

I don't believe he's an Omega man. I think he has more vintage Rolex than anything else.

It's very refreshing to see a young person who's made a few quid in the music industry actually splashing the cash on something they are obviously very passionate about.

He's not paying lip service he actually knows a thing or three well done and a great collection.

  25. #25
Thanks for the link....he comes across very well in it.

I wonder which watch forums he hangs around on?

What I love about this forum is that no matter how innocuous a remark I make, there'll be someone along shortly to disagree.

Really enjoyed that. Is anyone else thinking how much did he have on that bar area in terms of value?

Yes, the thought struck me too. I would imagine there was some security lurking somewhere.

I hope he didn't get mugged on the way home - expensive coffee and chat otherwise!

Apparently Mayer is worth about $45 million- plenty of disposable for a few watches.....

Even more to his credit that he doesn't spend it all on some of the god awful tat you can find for hundreds of thousands of dollars! I guess in his world his collection shows restraint!

A pleasant interview and the chap's natural enthusiasm really shone through. I'd never heard of him before.

I think he was meaning that an IWC is not something your average person would recognise. People who buy IWC maybe have a bit more knowledge than most? If you know nothing of watches and just want something expensive and nice, an IWC probably wouldn't make the shortlist.

Although the watches are expensive, it is a classic collection. Great video and a real treat to see a level of knowledge displayed as opposed to purely value and diamonds

Cool video, I really liked that, this chap has a real passion for watches and has a very cool collection. I do not think he has a single watch in that collection I do not appreciate.

I hope this is part of a series on people's collections as it is interesting.

Out of his collection, I like his IWC's.

i've been a long time john mayer fan, way before i became a WIS..

many years later i got into pilot watches..first with a Stowa type B, then for a Type A-ish, i picked up an IWC mark XVI and not long after that i watched the full video of John Mayer's "where the light is" and noticed this shot

notice the 12th fret(near the mic) of his guitar has a B-Uhr Type A signature triangle with two dots(12hr marker)..how cool is that!

From the same shot, he's wearing his IWC big pilot.. where in the hodinkee interview posted by the OP, he talks about the big pilot saying "the watch that i've worn the most"

now here is a pic of my "small pilot"..IWC Mark XVI, sporting the same 12hr marker

Well they definitely should've dropped those pocket squares (or gone Bond style with a straight slim piece visible). Mr Mayer obviously knows what he's talking about.

Just watched the video. Very refreshing to hear someone in his position (wealth) buy watches because of what they are, and not because it shows off how much money he has got.

    Some lovely watches he has!

Interesting video. I just assumed that we were all geeks, but it appears that some of us play guitars for a living too. That's an interesting collection.
