Thread: Recruitment................?

    Recruitment................?

I'm currently looking to recruit a Production Manager. I have 18 staff here and very rarely find the need to recruit, and in the past when I have done it has been from an archive of CV's I have on file.

Today, I find myself in a strange position, because even though circa 1 million people in the UK are unemployed and god know how many more seeking a change in employment I am finding it very hard to find someone to interview?!

I will admit I have never done this before, so if anyone could help me out I would really appreciate it

    Cheers

I do not know the skill/experience level you are aiming for but have you contacted the Jobcentre Plus? You may find the ideal candidate. When I was unemployed, I seemed to be in the minority who actually went to the Jobcentre to search for employment.

(Just noticed its my 100th post!)

I've just got off the phone with them now, very unhelpful, they just directed me to a website and couldn't get me off the phone quick enough. Am I naive in thinking there should just be a website I could search CV's? I'm beginning to think advertising in the paper is going to be my best shot.

A further suggestion might be to contact a local University as they will usually have a Careers/Jobs Department that supports undergraduates and graduates locate suitable work.

I hope you find someone suitable.

I have no experience of it, but http://www.jobsite.co.uk/ has been heavily advertised, so might be worth a look?

The issue with the job centre listing the vacancy is that you will get people applying who are totally unsuitable just so they can say I've applied for X number of jobs to keep on benefits.
Total jobs or Jobsite seem to be the most popular from previous employers my current emplyer uses a local site that acts like an agency but for a small one off fee and then advertises the vacancy in a fair few places.
Using an agency may be another option but it will cost.

There are loads of sites where you can register and search CVs or post vacancies. The higher traffic ones are people like monster, totaljobs, cwjobs (if its IT related).

There are many, many people looking for work now, so unless you're paying buttons and wanting the very best it shouldn't be that hard :)

    Good luck.

Job Centres are useless - I popped in to the local one last year with the intention of advertising for 2 positions and there was no-one who could / would speak to me. Eventually they gave me a phone and put me in contact with someone higher up the chain who told me I had to use their website and fill in 38 pages of useless "Yes, we have an equal opportunities policy - No, we don't kill and eat babies in an unsafe manner" bollocks before being allowed to post.

After a few days of nothing whilst it was "processed" they started putting people in contact with us who were no-where near what what we asked for (Computer literate? Says he plays Warcraft all day... that'll do. Needs to be able to work away on remote sites? Let's send along a 17 year old with no driving license and less clue). Then we started getting calls from other companies wanting to find our ideal employee / apprentice for us.

We ended up just asking around people we knew until we found someone who knew someone who was coming to end of his contract... and he brought his mate from the same office...

Put the details up here - might be worth a courtesy check with Eddie first of course - but with many many thousands of visits here per day there might be someone interested or know of someone who is.

There's been a big shift in recruitment methods over the last few years, in Scotland I use S1Jobs.com which for a couple of hundred quid gives you very broad coverage. Up here the only folk who seem to use newspapers are the local authorities and other public service organisations. Most companies will use their own websites and other services like S1Jobs, I'm not sure what the equivalent UK site is but I'm sure there are a few.

LinkedIn the business networking website is also well worth a look but you'll possibly need to build up a bit of a profile on it first.

If you have a company website its always worth having a careers page, ours gives us a steady supply of applications even when we have no vacancies advertised.

best of luck with the hiring process

    regards

My daughter works in recruitment, the one thing you need to do to get the right person is to make sure that your job description is accurate, so many get this wrong and end up seeing people that are unsuitable for the role, wasting a lot of time in the process.

Monster, TotalJobs and CVLibrary are my main sources, but in reality much if it is down to timing. ie the right person looking for the job at the same time your recruiting. In reality, I've realised that often reputation and word of mouth have been the best technique (though more time consuming). I've abandoned ethics and often looked to headhunt the right candidate (in the right manner ;) ). Sometimes they have not done the exact job before, but show they can do the required work, and learn to fill in the gaps, as long they have the right attitude. Obviously this probably doesn't apply to highly technical jobs.

That's not as strange as it sounds. Ireland has very high unemployment, but certain industries are still thriving, so positions are very hard to fill. To give you an example, I work in IT and it can easily take us 6+ months to fill a position. Not a particularly specialist position either.

There are job sites where you can search CVs, but I'd imagine that it's going to be tedious and possibly quite expensive.

You could look at working with an agency, but unless it's very different to Ireland, they tend to command a pretty high percentage of the successful candidate's wage. I think it's generally around 13% over here. That said, if you get a good one who will filter out the chancers, and it gets you someone good, it could be a runner.

A lot of businesses are turning to LinkedIn as it's normally cheaper than using an agency, and it suggests open vacancies to users, based on their profile. But this is only useful if the type of person you're looking to recruit is the type of person to use LinkedIn regularly.

Maybe start simple and place an advert in the local papers?

Have a quick google for the career transition partnership they specialise in finding jobs for HM forces and will find people with the skills you are looking for

    1. Presume no one in your company has the skills?
    2. Any trade magazine or online forum that has relevant people grouped together?
    3. As other have said really work in the job description so clear what skills applicants have to demonstrate otherwise you'll be awash with people who did finger and potato prints applying.
    4. Good luck

We use a recuitment consultant - bit pricey at about 15% but you should only have to see good candidates and get a 3 month "trial" period where if doesn't work out they get you a new one. Do watch that you agree if take them on permanently no new fees etc. if go down this route & read contract carefully as "standard practice" for the recuitment industry can seem a bit different to what may expect...

I did promote from within just before Xmas, it was a complete shambles and I have been giving disciplinaries since the start of the month, as any of you will know who have a lot of staff it is hard to promote in house! Sadly the person who was promoted has resigned from the role hence why I am here now asking these questions.

    Staff eh, who'd have 'em
