Thread: Any interest in one of these?

  1. #201
    Eddie,
That is a considerable improvement. Looking again at the cross-sectional view on p.1, it looks like the 200 metre water resistance derives in part from the use of a nylon crystal gasket in place of the L-shaped rubber gasket + crystal retaining ring but I'm not sure from the drawings whether the crown will be screw-down or not. Can you shed some light?

    Thanks
    Martin

The crown will be screwed, even Seiko dropped the bayonet crown.

This is looking better each time we see a new image. I note from the file name that the watch may be assigned as the PRS-68, which if my assumption is correct, is a nice and subtle nod to its original era.

Narrower font on 200metres and this would be perfect (well, for me):

Pretty darn smart though, thank you for the rendering.

BTW Eddie PRS-68 is a great designation. I'm in for two.

Is there any chance of getting the Great Britain in red? I think it would be a really nice touch

I still think the "SMITHS" needs to be smaller and of course, the font colour is now shown wrong (I should have cropped the image)

That's the one I've liked the most so far.

Switching between the designs I reckon this larger Smiths logo looks better. The smaller one looks like an apology.

Agree first is about right- second would be slightly too small on the final dial.
Looking again at the 200metres- does the placement seem right? I think its "correct" but the 6105 water resist text was always slightly unbalanced- I think due to necessity as the hand-ends (not the long bit the other bit) were a bit longer and fatter and the text was longer too.

I agree, I have terrible OCD. The reason why the first one works is because the S at the start of Smiths and the S at the end pretty much line up with the 12hr lume marker. On the smaller font whilst in itself looking nicer it doesn't line up at all nicely with the lume marker and just sort of jars.

This version is the nicest yet, looks like a really fantastic neat design.

I think the larger Smiths would have
Been fine but could live with this size, with the balance of design being a home run IMO. Is there Going to be a reserve list or...

While we're exploring various permutations, can I throw these two into the mix. I think the first works better than the second but whether it's better than other options discussed above, I'm not sure.

Matching the red on the dial to the red on the seconds hand was already a plan, the red on the render isn't the actual red on the hand.

It seems that the lume will be C3 (?) so the orange matches better with the greenish lume than red

How about some with a sunburst dial and a bezel in the same colour?
That way it wont look so much like the seiko, which I allready own one. :-)

    Cheers!

  33. #233
Not sure if we're voting on this but if we were mine would be for the larger Smiths logo and 200metres in orange. I reckon any more text on the dial would overcrowd things. I'm just hoping it's going to be within my budget...

I agree & think that red is right. At actual size the dot & text will be tiny and a positive colour is needed for it to register. Orange will appear as a weak red & may even cause the letters of the text to merge & blur slightly.

This looks fantastic!!!!, as long as the red of the lettering matches the red dot on the second hand, which I assume goes without saying.

Re: Any interest in one of these?

I think if any of the latest mock ups were a reality I'd buy one. But can't help thinking that the injection of colour will need to be seen on a prototype to make the right decision.

In the pics the orange looks great, but I think the red might look better in reality. Where's Harry Hill when you need him?

I'm sure Eddie will make the right choice; and hopefully it will be available in February (birthday time :-))

It's also a font colour actually found on Seiko divers of this period..

Things look very different when greatly enlarged. The top image ^^ is the least magnified but is starting to illustrate the weaknesses that I referred to.

    Big fan of the orange.
Bit concerned though as I thought this was a lot nearer to being released but if the face hasn't been finalised yet then I assume it will be next year.

Without having read all seven pages and it being a bit early in the day, would it be better in feet than metres, quietly flicking a V to metric?

A lighter Red for me. I'd change the Metres to Meters, or simply 200M (which would be better imho) though, It is marked up as GB after all and it's a nod to a Japanese watch, adding in another country is just all confusing - although, Japanese influence and movement, British design and German build can't be a bad thing ;)

I'll have one - if there was ever pre-ordering I'd send my cash today, although I appreciate that isn't in Eddie's business model.
It's just a matter of time...

IMO it should be Metres, British spelling for a British watch.
    Or simply M.

A metre is a measurement, a meter measures it.

I agree. It says Great Britain on the dial and "feet" is more in keeping. IMHO.
