    Vintage

Ok folks, famous last words but I'm finished with modern watches as I reckon I have a balanced collection of them. I now need a vintage (sad thing is that I'm now technically vintage myself according to our criteria).

I have no money this year but am planning to get married next year and have been given a green light to buy a watch for it (actually SWMBO stated that 'I assume you'll be buying a watch" when looking at a budget).

So, given that I have two Bremonts (Alt1-P and MB2), and IWC diver and Omega sports watch what you suggest in the following categories:

    £1000, £2000, £3000?

So much to choose from, but if it were me:

    1000 - An Omega cal 500 series in 18k
    2000 - Heuer Carrera 12 or 45
3000 - No idea, never considered vintage at that price level (but you might need to for a Carrera 12 in top nick)!

    It's got to be Speedmaster

    £1000 - Mk2 Speedmaster
£2000 - Early cal 861 Speedmaster Pro' (possibly 1969) with box & papers
    £3000 - Late cal 321 Speedmaster Pro'

Well that's what I would do!

Thanks Neil, I'm going to have to try the vintage Rolexes as I'm concerned they'll wear too small for me. I did see a lovely used IWC Mk XV recently but would love to try a Mk XII as well.

The SM300 really interests me, as does the cal 321 Speedy (don't like the MkII at all though), as does the Autavia (although I reall need to look at one of those int he flesh I reckon).

Yep, the MK XV's are the last ones with the proper hands.

    Here's mine....

The MK XII's will be a bit smaller if that concerns you.

    Good luck.
    Cheers,
    Neil.

    a slippery slope..................

    Good man!

£1000 - MY '66 cal.564 black dialled Omega Pie Pan Constellation
    £2000 - MY '71 cal.861 'Stepped dial' Omega Speedmaster (b but no p).......

£3000 - A loose 'Plexi' 5513 Sub. A fat pile of £20'/£50 notes on the table in the current climate could do the trick?

If I had the money to branch out from Omega collecting I'd go for:

    Circa £1K Glycine Airman SST
Circa £2K Heuer Carrera in top notch condition or 1163 Autavia
Circa £3k Heuer, Sinn or Lemania Bund (Lemania 5100 movement)

    Cheers

    Ian

Des, I think it has to be one of these.....a Speedmaster pre-68 with the lovely 321 movement. For the money it really is the bargain high quality vintage watch of the moment I reckon.

For a little bit more you could find a Rollie GMT 1675.

Either are great wearable (and tradeable) classic pieces.
