CWC Quartz Model and Mfg. Year Questions

    Dear Friends,

I bought a CWC quartz from a very good friend / co-worker of mine on Monday. He said it was from early '80s. By looking at the case back can you tell the manufacturing date / year and also model / type?

Thanks in advance, enjoy the night fotos . . .

The CWC text on the top of the dial is not circled unlike the other CWC timepieces I see in the posts. I think it is called fat version? Case size is around 36 mm w/o crown. The crown is not screw down type, so I guess it is not considered diver model. I will be very grateful if you enlighten me, please.

The accuracy, 24 / 7 on the wrist, is around +1 sec. / week.

    Very Best Regards . . .

    Capt. Serdal

Nice - yes CWC W10 (Army issue), 1980 issue, fat case. I have the 1981 RN Navigator version with date. Splash proof, and I even swum in mine once or twice without ill-effect, though I wouldn't recommend it. The Circle T under the CWC logo indicates that the lume is tritium.

Nice watches chaps. I prefer the early fat cased CWCs and Precistas.

Yes Serdal, you have a 1980 fat boy!
This was the first year of manufacture and I have 3 of these beauties. I have never seen a watch with the 1981 date stamp and so the navigator is unusual in the 2nd post. I also have a navigator from 1980 with 032 as the serial number.
In 1982 the CWC logo gained an oval around the outside.
There may have beeen a transition period as I visited a shop called Anchor Supplies and they get watches direct from the MOD.
They had 2 watches in stock that had the non oval CWC logo but the case backs were stamped 1982. Now of course there could have been some swapping of the parts but these watches had not been in civilian hands.

I have a 1982 "fat boy" with the oval CWC logo. Although the dial appears to be identical to the later ones, the print is much crisper. This seems to be the case with all of the early ones.
    Has anybody else noticed this?

Yes I agree Ian, it is as if the later dials are using less of the white paint. It is much less dense than the older ones.

    Dear Comrades,

Thank you so much for your very warm welcome and very kind words.

I particularly appreciate and am grateful for these precious information. I can not blame my co-worker for buying 3 of these fantastic timepieces at a time! These loveliest timepieces are keepers!

Has any of you applied L or T lume? In other words relumed?

Yes, but using a more basic lume made by Bergeon. I am experimenting at the moment. :)

Thanks for the info Ian. Have you completed the reluming work? If so, could you post some day and night fotos? Do you prefer cream (White), green or blue colour lume?

I haven't finished yet but I will post some photos when completed. I frefer green or green/yellow aged looking lume. I'm not keen on white lume really but it looks good on new watches.

I entirely agree with you Ian. Vintage looking greenish yellow lume is fantastic, indeed. My second choice is blue lume.

    My New Addiction

Unfortunately you are right! It is quite addictive. I should visit my co-worker one of these days to steal, I mean buy his other two CWCs. :D

I took one of mine to pieces so that I could lubricate the movement. I noticed that the movement had the detent springs for both day and date wheels. The rest of the calendar mechanism was not present.

Re: CWC Quartz Model and Mfg. Year Questions

I recently sold a 1980 "fat boy" with the serial number 789. The lume on it was only just starting to "go" and despite its age, stayed lit on moving into a darkened room for a while (sunlight still excites tritium a little bit):

...but what do I know; I don't even like watches!
