    Singapore Bound

    Hello all,

I see from a few previous posts that Singapore is a good place to buy watches. I will be travelling there in a week or so on business and I fancy a new purchase. Would any forum members be able to recommend any ADs or good dealers? Or anything specific I can get there you cant get easily in the UK? I read someone has recommended Orchard Road as a good start but any other advice would be appreciated. Ta.

Nobody? I'm going to Singapore in april, so I'm quite curious as well.

And how do you avoid customs?

Try "The Hour Glass" on Orchard Road.

Don't be greedy (buy just 1 or 2)and post the boxes/papers etc back to a friend in the UK some way away from your home address.

    Great place for shopping!

Unfortunately with the current worthlessness of sterling, not sure what bargains are to be had. Certainly better stock of certain items. Managed to get a Rolex SD 5 years ago when there was a massive wait list over here.

VAT there is 5% so worth claiming back.

Recommend passions.com.sg as a source of used watches.

Orchard Road is you best bet for AD though!

    Re: Singapore Bound

Tried to post a reply an hour ago and it didn't go through so here goes again - I used to live in Singapore until about 2 years ago and at that time knew most of the watch shops (and some collectors ) in Singapore City.
I'm guessing you're after decent vintage watches? My name cards are buried underneath a bunch of household effects that just arrived but here are some places to be going along with:

    1) First & second Flrs Lucky Plaza, Orchard Road
    2) Lower ground flr, Lucky Chinatown, South Bridge Road (Ray's)
    3) First flr, Ming Arcade, Orchard Road (opp. Hard Rock Cafe)
    4) Mezzanine Flr, Jalan Sultan Centre, Beach Road (opp. Golden Mile Complex)
    5) First Flr, Peninsular Plaza, Coleman Street
    6) Second Flr, Chinatown Point, South Bridge Road
    7) First & second Flrs, People's Park Complex, Eu Tong Sen Street

Bear in mind in Singapore the ground floor is the first floor.

Also check out Alvin at Monster-Time (http://www.monster-time.com/) who has some good stuff.

On Sunday some watch dealers show their wares at the market in China Square Central, Cross Street.

You can check out <http://www.sg-roc.com/archive/index.php/t-950.html> for a good list of vintage watch dealers, and there's a a pretty comprehensive list at <http://www.yellowpages.com.sg/newiyp...hes-Retail&N=0>.

Hopefully I'll be able to dig out my name cards in the near future and I'll be able to give you some more specific details.

    Happy hunting!!

One thing to consider if you're buying used is that the humid
climate can have an adverse effect on watches. I suppose
watches with a decent WR will be OK, but I'd be very cautious
about dress watches with low WR.

    Re: Singapore Bound

Generally all the above are ok, if you stick along Orchard Road, you'd see all the AD's left & right.

The Centrepoint has, I think 2 - 3 shops, Watches of Switzerland etc, so its easy to compare. The Paragon is more up-market. The ADs in Ngee Ann City are also a good place to visit, all very high end & there's Rolex right across the road. I've given you 3 buildings all within a 200 metres radius of each other.

You might want to avoid the tourist traps.

Show us what you've got when you get them, enjoy.

I live and work here in Sing. Loads of places to go but there wont be many bargains because of the currency. Cortina, Hour Glass and Sincere watches are good. I know a guy at Hour Glass at Raffles hotel who will do his best to get you a good discount. I could put you in touch. If you fancy a beer and a natter about watches when you are over, let me know. Alex.

Also visiotime.com are very good for new and second hand. Singapore is a watch-mad city...

Loads of watch shops in the new ION mall by Orchard MRT. As mentioned Ngee Ann City (Takashemaya) down the road has a good selection. I'd stay away from Orchard and the tourist traps, I'll dig up some names of some smaller retailers.

Indeed, popped in there last week and can especially recommend the IWC brand store (must be one of their best in terms of collection, the staff said that probably only the IWC brand store in HK was better) and the Hour Glass.
The Hour Glass store there carries Urwerk (though mostly blinged-up models :? ) and has some very neat horological items on display, including some giant electronic time device from Patek Phillippe that looks very 8) but they have no idea how to operate it since it was bought at auction and did not come with papers.

I've also found The Hour Glass @ Raffles to be very good to deal with. But the exchange rate now makes real bargains a bit out of reach. :(
