    Sunsetting on a WIS

Well, i have almost been here before...for various reason...but today, on top of current work issues, future redundancy/severance no later than September, stress..and the general state of things...I think I have come very close to falling out with a good friend...over a couple of bits of steel FFS..!!!

Is it me? or is the forum somewhat devoid of the interesting stuff i used to enjoy....I appreciate that interesting is down to the individual...but to me...another modern SM or pics of a watch transferred from SC to Watchtalk a day later by the new owner is not very interesting and best saved for WUS..Perhaps I am part of the problem..afterall what of any interest have i posted recently...nothing..nothing at all..

Well...this morning, after a couple of frank emails between aforementioned friend and I...the decision has been made to step away for a while..

I am very far away from where i was when i started collecting, and would like to return there somewhen when things are easier for me.

Back then, I would not have dreamed i could almost lose a friend..so better to lose the WISdom for a while methinks.

I am going to clear out all but 2 watches, afterall even a disillusion WIS needs to tell the time once and a while.

Then I will buy the one peice I had promised both myself and my wife I would wear then give to my son on his 18th...
This was to be his birthyear watch, but will now be mine and the wheels are in motion to secure this peice.

This is not an attempt to get cries of " no don;t do it " etc....just thought you might like to know.....I suspect, that if i stop collecting/buying/ for a time, i can rekindle my interest at a later date and with a better outlook.

Been there too mate, i guess like many hobbies the passion comes and goes. And of course times are tough just now, i'm sure everyone here has a story of some personal distress or pressure these last couple years, i certainly have.

Anyway, all the best, hope to see you back here soon  :D

We obviously don't know each other, but for what it's worth this sounds like a good decision to me. At the end of the day, they are only watches, and they'll still be there when you're ready to step back in - refreshed by the break and with renewed perspective on the whole thing.

    Re: Sunsetting on a WIS

I'll still be here David...just going to curb the actual physical side of the hobby..

So sell what i have , and enjoy the forum by contributing more to the other areas and hopefully sharing some of the knowledge and experience i have, rather than just frantically trying to obtain the next chunk of steel...

I might even post a joke or 2.. or maybe some smilies..

Never dealt with you personally but always enjoyed the watches you had and occasionally sold on, some lovely pieces... looking forward to seeing what the "one" will be :)

It is probably healthy to let other stuff in your life take priority. Just appreciate the few watches you have for a while and see how you feel. I am also unlikely to buy anything in the next 12 months. Come back to it when you feel comfortable.

I hope it does, and your (temporary) absense will rekindle your interest in the hobby,

Keith, I think it does everyone good to step back for a while. Been there, done that, bought the T-Shirt...sold the T-Shirt. Everything in life changes and moves on to a certain extent.

I was the Doxa nut for a while. Ate, slept and shat the darn things but had to step back at one stage and glad I did. Passion was gone and too much crap associated with it all. Now things have stabalized both in the job front and watchdom and I've regained a bit of the passion due to the DWL book.

It was Simon's posting a while back about selling his vintage collection that got me thinking about why the hell I collect watches, especially now that I basically only ever wear my GMT Rolex. I have 2 boxes of watches which tie up a crap load of money and all they do is sit there and gather dust. For me it is time to thin the herd and look at something else....2 tone GMT Rolly has my eye now....getting older and prefer comfort and a bit of perceived quality

I enjoyed the fun and passion but probably like you feel that I can now just lurk and swan in and out of forums and post only if I feel I have something to say that is vaguely relevant and may add to the conversation.

I've enjoyed your postings and know you will still be around.

    take care

    Pete

Sorry to read this Keith but must admit I've been feeling the same lately.

The forums used to be great places to learn and meet like minded individuals but I fear the tide is changing. Threads used to inspire me to research brands and subjects that I'd never previously considered,. With a few noticeable exceptions (Ralphy and NeilC spring to mind) I can't remember the last post that did this. Maybe I'm just becoming a jaded old bore but I really miss this aspect of forums.

Anyway keep in touch mate, I hope you settle into your new house and find a new job / income easily when the time comes.

    Cheers,

    Gary

Probably not a bad idea Keith, this WIS lark can become a bit consuming. How about writing a step by step guide to servicing hummers just to keep the interest levels up

My wisdom says, that when you talk about it … that’s it, you just wanna talk about it. I’ve come and gone loads of times and nobody noticed. The bastards.

Anyway, often the distance is needed for very-many reasons and like youself, I also find it difficult to concentrate on something as stupid as watches when there are more pressing issues at hand. I wish you all the best and come and go as you like. No need to feel guilty when you are not here and use the forum whenever you are after some light relief.

I understand that as of late the forum has lacked depth but we’ve been having lots of new members and they need to go thru the same cycle of crap (that we went through) before they open up. But that is our job and I am working on it as we speak.

What 2 watches are you going to keep? I’ve only got 2, with the 3rd one being the red Accutron I got off you which has been needing a new battery for months.

    Hello Keith
you are quite right to re-evaluate your priorities, I think we all have to do so on occasion - and friendship should be a high priority.

It sounds like a difficult time for you and I hope you are able to cope with it without undue stress and I'm also pleased that you will continue to be a presence on this forum: I've enjoyed your contributions and certainly regard you as one of the good contributors on here.

All the best to you Keith.

Take care Keith and like a couple of others I've been feeling a little flat for want of a better word - have been buying lots of watches and not wearing them - have been toying with the idea of selling the lot and buying just one to keep my first SMP company.

With my move later this year, it may be a good time, like yourself to step back a little bit and just dip in now and again and come back at it later with renewed passion.

    Re: Sunsetting on a WIS

Sorry that you are leaving us, as I thought you a worthy contributor to the forum.

As John mentioned, this forum has changed. That in combination with me having a watch stolen and and a watchmaker lose another in quick succesion almost made me leave this hobby in disgust. I thought, nobody can be this unlucky and not take it as a sign. Why even bother. Though I am fairly disgusted, I am still hanging on.

We might see you again here.

Sorry to hear about your predicament Keith but glad to hear that you will still be contributing here. I value your in depth knowledge in specialist areas, although I have never had cause to need it.
You are one of the very best I have ever dealt with, honest as the day is..., friendly and helpful to a fault. I hope you make the right decisions and wish you the best whatever you decide to do.

    Cheers Keith.

Hello Keith, I'm a big believer that the things which give you happiness in life are a caring partner and a network of supportive friends. When entering a new phase in your life and suffering with job issues it is difficult to remeber this. If in order to re-gain a clear head about friendships and their priority, means stepping back for a while so be it. Good luck and I'm sure you'll soon re-gain your mojo, I hope you do, as like others, I enjoy your contribution to the forum.

Hi Keith, as you mentioned yourself they are only watches and can be obtained again (if you so desire) in the future.

Enjoy what you have and hope to see you contributing again to this forum.

Ah the Villemont is good. It is very sad they went down. Even sadder when there are lesser souls who are still alive. At that niche in the market it is hard to know who you are making watches for, and how to let them know about it. Especially with all the corruption, at the customer interphase.

Yes it is 344 and I’ve ordered a couple.

    Re: Sunsetting on a WIS

Hi Keith a break is a good thing, I promised myself last month I would draw back from the forum, the watch flipping etc. etc. and spend more time on other things. Haven't quite managed it yet as I have had bad colds almost continuously and sitting on the net is easier then going out and doing something. I bought a Sigma DP-1 camera on Saturday and have been playing with that since, we went out for a walk yesterday afternoon and I have promised mrs NJH that as the weather improves we will be doing much more sight seeing this year. If anything it is the photography section on this forum that has inspired me to get much more involved in something which was almost my profession as a teenager. Anyways I have this old Cyclo-Cross bike down here to get to you, I reckon knowing your skills you will take a lot of pleasure from recommissioning it into a fully sorted bike.

BTW I wear the oysterquartz I got from you pretty much everyday to work, I sometimes feel a little guilty about it but then it makes me question why I have the other watches. Modern watches especially just leave me cold these days, and I agree the endless threads about what is your favourite PO version or which strap colour is best get very tedious but we can ignore those threads.

If you have just one more OP left in you I would love to see an article about your IWC da vinci, but I hope we see much more of you again in the future.

Good idea to take a break Keith.

I do agree there is a lack of informative/educational posts recently but as John said newbies have to go through the same "circle of crap" we did.

Personally I find it hard to start a thread or post something I haven't done already but do still derive some pleasure from answering questions if I can and you are well equipped to do this.

Go. Make it some place that's warm, and a couple of weeks after Easter. This way, the schools are still on and the Easter pilgrims have left, which results in lower prices. Seville at the beginning of May sounds good to me.

Even if you don't acquire watches you can still accumulate knowledge, share what you know, offer up some advice and opinion of the more overlooked or less well known makes - that sort of post is what got me into the whole thing - 'I didn't know there was so much too it...'.
I'm finding it difficult to justify another expensive watch as I'm unfortunately still in love with my current few; I started looking at vintage but cheap, there's still lots of interesting stuff for a few hundred quid which you don't have to hang on to either.

Had no idea that having an interest in watches could induce so much stress and angst. Am I the only person who doesn't have a clue what this is all about? Reckon Keith is right though, if it makes him feel like that, it's definitely time for a change of perspective.
