I had similar concerns when going to Burma (Myanmar) so took the safer option and wore my Seiko

Just made me feel a bit safer :blackeye:

Basically I see no more risks than usual, but if it makes you paranoid leave it at home.

I'd be concerned about taking it off and leaving it on your dresser while you're in the shower, but then again, I don't know if you should get your U2 wet by showering with it.

You really should be wearing a GMT watch anyway.

Oh, the dilemma of it all. Maybe it is easier to just stay home. :)

Just be very carefull, wear it in the hotel but with caution out of the hotel.

Personally I reckon it makes you a bit of a target wearing an expensive watch abroad. Unless it's a place I'm familiar with then the 'day to day ' watches seem more practical to be taking.

I have been to many places around the world including Africa, South America, Caribbean, India. My advice before going anywhere is to read the foreign and commonwealth travel advice on the country concerned and make your own mind up. The US also have a similar country advice which gives you an idea.

So long as you apply some commonsense i.e. don't go off the beaten track, walk down side streets late at night, take non-official taxis (a friend of mine lost his Rolex Sub when the taxi driver phoned someone who held him up at gunpoint at some traffic lights, nothing could be proved though).

In my experience you won't have a problem in Egypt.

A no brainer for me... gives me a chance to wear one of my favourite watches...

One of our hosts' Seiko divers!!

A fantastic travel watch... great legibility, great lume, day/date, waterproof, GMT (if you have one of the inserts), and tough as old boots. All for a hundred quid.

Why risk a U1 in a third world country, when you can wear a cheapy that will do just as good a job?

    Effortless.

Good excuse to buy yourself a beater before you go.

    Cheers

Why buy a watch and then be frightened to wear it :? Pointless, you might as well sell it/them.

Well, no problems with wearing an IWC watch out there, but the country is full of scam artists :( Left a bad taste in the mouth. Got scammed for a "tour" at $120 when I was low on money and found the next day entry to Giza Pyramids was 60 Egyptian Pounds (less than 10GBP). And it happened over and over. Taxi drivers don't take you where you want to go, or they take the long way round when you know it's the wrong way (and with GPS and maps on my phone).

Topped off by Alitalia delays, missing connections, losing luggage (thankfully arrived today) and hard to believe this is the first time I'm saying I'm happy to be back in the UK after a holiday!

Re: Going on holiday, should I take an expensive watch?

Funny story while out there. I was staying next to the CityStars Mall... not 0.1 miles from the centre of town according to Expedia, and went to the Rolex shop and asked them where I could look at IWC watches. They gave me directions, which I took and realised it was to the WC...! I went back and showed them my watch and said IWC watches but they didn't seem to be familiar with the brand.

And yeah, I took a roll of toilet paper. They charge you to use the toilet, toilet paper and to wash your hands. I took the hand gel from the airport shop so I was sorted for that at least. The tour guide on one of the days got in an argument with one of the guys trying to charge me to use the toilet as I had no money left (after all the rip off merchants) in the last 2 days. Barely had any money to get a cheap McDonalds that night.

Looks like I'm out of buying anything for a while now. No work for a week means no pay, and this was my first holiday in almost 3 years, and cost close to 1000GBP or more after all the scams :(

Apart from the scammers, it was great to see so much history.

The alternative is to wear a cheap £20 Timex I've had for a few years.
if youre going to worry about it then dont take it and take the timex. simple as.
Good luck everybody. Have a good one.

If it's insured wear and don't worry. Watches are made to be worn! I've never thought about it when I've been on holiday.

Re: Going on holiday, should I take an expensive watch?

I went to Egypt at the beginning of November and I brought my old quartz casio with me...there are a lot of kids begging for money there, so I'd go for the cheap watch if you don't want to be pestered.

Re: Going on holiday, should I take an expensive watch?

well I don't think the watch was a problem at all, but then I wasn't wearing any gold or a shiny stainless steel watch. I wasn't worried once I was there, and obviously not when I was wearing long sleeves. There were times when they didn't know where we were from and the question was always where we were from which revealed we weren't from around there, which led to the rip off prices. I'm sure if I ever went back again it wouldn't be a problem as I know what to watch out for, though I can't see myself going back again for a long while. There were times when the kids would ask to use my camera and take a pic of me but I was never sure if they were going to run away with it (probably unlikely) or charge money for taking the picture (much more likely). Either way I didn't hand it over as it's a touch screen phone (Nokia N900) and seems to confuse people taking pictures if they aren't used to it.

Pertaining to watches, I had more people eyeing my watch in a Stockholm casino than at anytime in Egypt.

It was your money they were after, not your watch; the pestering will continue irrespective of your choice of wrist-wear!

The thing is I don't worry when going to a Scandinavian country. I'm hoping to go to Iceland in the next few month's and may even take my usual 2 or 3 with strap changes etc.

Just don't pop into the banks when you are in Iceland - they'll have the watch off your wrist ;)

Sorry you had some rip off merchants effect some of your holiday - but glad you wore what you wanted.
It's just a matter of time...
