can of worms springs to mind
Hello All,
Rolex seem to be a watchmaker that polarises opinion. Are you a fan, if so what do you like about them? If you are the opposite and do not hold them in high regard what brings you to that decision?
Do you prefer Rolex's vintage models or do you feel their recent watches are the best?
For myself I am a fan of vintage Rolex watches. They just seem to capture the moment and spirit of the era they were produced. I know people can, with justification, say there are better movements, but overall I really think they are wonderful pieces of history.
Kind Regards
Warren
can of worms springs to mind
I personally don't like them, I dislike cyclops styles and just think the brand is a little pretentious compared to some others.
It's kind of like buying a car for it's badge !!

Oh dear.......now you've gone and done it!
If you wish to retain to attain or retain a level headed, moderately rational approach to watches; BUG OUT NOW!
Short answer: Yes
Imo Rolex is like BMW. Both are high quality and the chances are you will like at least one model in the range. However they both have a very strong brand image which is either a good thing or puts you off. Oh and agreed with the above, cyclops gets a
Its more about the owners than the product. :wink
Oh no, someone's sneaked in a car / watch analogy now too. This is going to end in tears

In agreement as well
It is great to hear members opinions. I do not believe there is another watch brand that polarises opinions in such a way. But surely you have to admire Rolex history and the love of various models????

Rolex have produced tough well made sports watches that have not altered in design for decades, they keep their value and lots of people love them. They also evoke a lot of envy and hate as this thread will show. Marmite anyone ?
+1, but there are thousands who dislike Patek, which is considered the pinnacle of watchmaking.Originally Posted by brendano

It's all about personal taste and (dis-)liking.
The only Rolex I might consider buying - ever - is the Sub no date. The old version that is, without all the text on it. I dislike watches filled with text, I dislike watches with cyclops, I dislike the Rolex design.
Just my personal opinion and everybody should feel free to express their love for Rolex ;)

Thanks Crusader!
Love the classical styles. The Sub ND is for me one of the most perfectly proportioned watches ever made. Quality wise they are okay, but you can get better for the same money (although you have to be careful about how you say this, look at the reaction my Grand Seiko thread got!).
But I could never not have a Sub ND in my collection, it is just so versatile and reliable.
nuff said :D
No.
But:
I own a Rolex Explorer 114270 and I'm very happy with it.
The design appeals greatly to me, the overall quality is
quite good and it keeps excellent time (+/-1s per day).
Then again, I'm also a "fan" of G-Shock watches and the PRS-10.
Whatever mows your lawn, my friend :-)
I dislike them so much they take up the highest percentage of my collection.
It's just a matter of time...
nope....had a fancy for a daytona...tried one on last friday....big disappointment....too small and not what I expected. So yet to find one I like. Love omegas and some breitlings. But still after something special. A JLC/PP/VC....next year ?
I think the problem with Rolex is that you go from this -
To this -
Providing we are talking about steel sports watches I'm a huge fan, classic designs, amazing history, in house movements etc. I've never worn another diver that feels as special as a sub or a SD 8)
"I looked with pity not untinged with scorn upon these trivial-minded passers-by"
They are just ok IMO, have had a few but will probably never own another as they are a bit boring and I don't like what they represent amongst the general public. Having said that, for someone
buying a new watch it makes more sense to most other brands as the residuals are
so strong. But again, I cannot see myself buying a new watch again.
Sinn seems to be the brand I am most drawn to nowadays.
Yes, from few days ago when I had one very nice Submariner "No data" on my wrist!
Another car analogy - if you are into cars you have to have owned an Alfa at some point.
I like the Submariner and Sea Dweller, but I wouldn't want to spend that much on one, especially when there are so many similar models from various manufacturers for a lot less.
However, I can see the attraction and the quality is very very high. Maybe when I’m richer I’ll sell my Grovana and buy a Rolex Sub. :)
Not a big fan of the recent larger cases and polished links. Appreciate the vintage asethetics more.
Vintage ONLY. All the new ones look like fakes  ''Is that a real one''?
Only an old plexi sub/GMT, Explorer 1 or an Air King Date would have me reaching for the deeds to the house. The kids can always find somewhere else to live
no.....rather cut my wrist of.....however i have seen some vintage ones that i would glue it back on for.
I probably won't ever buy one, since I have so many other models I would like to have first. They just don't have something to attract my attention.
I could have sworn we discussed this last week, and the week before that, and the week before that, and the week before that.......

Whole chunks of my life come under the heading "it seemed like a good idea at the time".
I like some of the Rolex models, very difficult to like them all IMO and I`m not a fan of the bigger sports ones. The Sub is an iconic classic, although I kept mine for exactly 1 month as I couldn`t get along with the fit of the bracelet and I had other watches I preferred to keep (Omega 2254.50 SMP).
The prices are crazy and there's no way I`d ever buy new; careful scrutiny of the second hand market does turn up bargains though  which is how I bought mine. I much prefer the 36mm models, which fit my 6.75" wrist better. I also like a bit of bling, so I`ve ended up with the following:
2005 Explorer 1. A classic IMO which I always take on holidays for some reason. No pictures but we all know what it looks like.
1986 2-tone Datejust, Jubilee Bracelet, fluted bezel, in NOS condition. Couldn`t believe my luck when I stumbled across this one. Makes me feel like an 80s car dealer when I wear it :)
2002 steel Datejust, white gold fluted bezel, jubilee bracelet. Similar to the 2-tone but wears totally different. Black dial really works on this one 8)
2008 latest style steel Datejust, smooth bezel/Oyster bracelet (polished links) 116200.
Whilst I prefer the 'classic' style of the older Datejusts, the latest model feels much more substantial and is well worth a look. It feels totally different to the older ones.
As for the rest of the current range, there's nothing that appeals to me. I`m happy to stick with these and (hopefully) they'll hold their value in the future.
Paul
Me thinks :
Overpriced,
Overproduced,
Overrated
All over the place

(having said that - MIGHT get one one day ...
as Clarkson says on the Alfa, you must have one one day  )

I love them. Well the one's I like anyway.
Not a fan of the brand as such but do like certain no date subs/dwellers.
Hope to get one someday, although not at the top of my list at the moment
Yes and no.
Rolex are very important for the history of horology, with their oyster case and self-winding movement.
Personally, I prefer the older vintage style than the newer gaudy "hey look at me, I'm wearing a Rolex therefore I'm rich" mentality of some. Have you seen the leopard/gold case Daytona? I call it the "Rio Ferdinand" watch.

Yes. Or, maybe.
This question has never been asked before, so thanks for bringing it up. After all Rolex is a little-known watchmaker whose brand isn't a metaphor for anything, so it never really gets anyone's prejudiced juices flowing. And it's always nice to touch on the more modest brands from time to time instead of the mainstream ones that get discussed day after day.
...but what do I know; I don't even like watches!
Then surely your problem is with the general public?Originally Posted by loddrik

yes really like some rolex. The only brand i'm a fan of is damasko as in i like every model they make. All the others have a few horrors in the line up even my favorite brand seiko.
And it should really have the Busso V6 :wink:Originally Posted by watchmad

I still dislike them as much as I did last time this came up - although I have since been persuaded of their merits as a professional dive watch.
