Thread: Is anyone a whizz with RC helicopters?

Is anyone a whizz with RC helicopters?

I was into cars a while ago but fancy flying!
Ideally I want something that is a kit rather than ready to use out of the box.
Would prefer electric to nitro but willing to go the nitro route if I really have to.
I am a bit of a loss as to what I should be looking for.
Cant fly one either by the way but obviously willing to learn as long as I when I crash I dont potentially write off £1K's worth of copter

Get a counter rotating 4ch first, even if it is an out of the box electric to learn a little bit about flying them. If you thought you could drive an RC Car, you will be amazed at just how useless you are at working out how to avoid things in 3 dimensions, particularly when it is flying towards you

Then get a "proper" one with training brace underneath, but be prepared to spend lots of money on rebuilds.

If you go straight in regardless, get lessons rather than an overdraft.

RC copters are incredibly tricky to fly, best to go along to a club and get chatting to a few members. They'll be happy to show you various techniques, give you loads of info and tell you what to do and, more importantly, what not to do!

They're feckin' expensive and time consuming to build if they hit the deck hard. Personally I'm happy to spend £2000 on a watch without a second thought, but after going to a few club meets I decided that RC copters were a little too expensive for my tastes. :)

I think I need to buy something cheap to begin with to see if I have the patience to learn.

One of the 4ch Electrics can be had for around £100 and can be flown around the house quite happily.

An E-Flight MCx is a great little thing for buzzing around... about £80

They are great fun, but they are a bit big for flying indoors. Remember that these small(ish) electrics are only usable outdoors when there is NO wind whatsoever..... and I mean NO WIND.

My personal thoughts are a smaller one for indoors and a more powerful for outdoors.

I bought an EF Sabre which is a ready to fly 4 channel fixed pitch helicopter. I flew it round the living room for a while. Flying it was like trying to keep jelly on top of a beach ball with a hair dryer. I wasn't doing so bad, I only had to paint one wall. That was until it flew at me at nut height. I panicked and jumped out of the way and it proceeded to thrash itself to death against a £1000 electric guitar and a £1500 amplifier. I think maybe lacerated nuts would have been cheaper to fix.

    Ordered one of these

    http://www.buzzflyer.co.uk/Sub-Micro-RC ... p-97-1063/

LIked the look of it and decided to go small so I can use it indoors and get used to it first before maybe getting something bigger.
Got the "deluxe" version so I have a case for it along with an extra battery.
It might not be the easiest one to learn with but I am up for a challenge, got the stabilizing legs for it as well :D

Excellent! My nephew had one. Flew it outdoors, it went out of range, so no control whatsoever, and it ended up in a lake.

Edit again, Pheonix flight sim is simply thee best one to buy... http://www.phoenix-sim.com/welcome.htm

I have a buzzfly and its a tricky bugger to fly no good for noobies at all, honestly better with a big one !! The buzzfly is so quick and responsive, before you can react its crashed..

For a noob you cant go wrong with a Blade 400. ( 300£) Fly straight out of the box with no pesky setting up and it can be tweeked as you get better comes with everything needed to go, the radio gear is very good.

I was into helis while I had a rest from watches !! to be honest, helis proved more costly !!! :D

If you need any advice etc give me a shout, Ive packed in now but still can point you to good dealers etc.

BE PREPARED TO SPEND BIG CASH :D

Pic is of a Beam E4 ( smaller one ) And a Gaui Hurricane ( big and scary !!! )

Can't one buy a training aid for these things that you plug into a computer and practice with. I had it in mind to buy one but they scare the cr@p out of me.

I dont mind if the Buzzfly is a bit tricky to master,up for the challenge at the moment and I would like to try and learn on something that is a bit twitchy and not so easy to fly as I hope it would stand me in good stead with something larger in the future.

Not me: the only time my brother let me have a go with one of his resulted in a £700 bill.
