    Powermat, what's that all about

Can there be any real benefits to this?

Very stylish. I suspect that's what it is about.

    Best wishes,

I guess it saves having multiple chargers for all your different devices 8)

Probably aimed at the lazy or unorganised

This is just the start. Soon we'll be able to banish all our chargers and use something like this. Then, further down the line, our gadgets will be powered by house-sized magnetic induction - or whatever tech they develop between now and then. Trailing wires, broken plugs etc. are on the way out - and it can't come soon enough.

one charger instead of loads chuck on your ds ipod and camera and bobs your uncle i've been waiting for this for some time.

you do have to have a special cover for your devices

Like the idea- its pain having to keep all those different chargers about and in an order so you know which is for what.
Bit on the steep side though, for now at least.

"Your phone or DS or whatever you want to charge will need a Powermat Receiver sleeve"

I presume you need a different 'sleeve' for each device you want to charge.

I knew there would be a catch, wonder how much they would cost...

Was thinking about buying one of these, turning it into a mousemat and modifying a rechargeable wireless mouse, solving the charging/changing batteries problem.

Well, this clearly works through induction - two coils near each other, coil A has a changing electric current (and therefore a changing electromagnetic field). The changing field through coil B induces a current to flow through coil B.

I'm not sure how big the generated field would be in this situation, but I'm willing to bet it'd stuff a watch. I'll ask an electronic engineer mate to do some back of a napkin calculations...

Re: Powermat, what's that all about

This is real emerging technology, in fact Powermat went on sale in the USA yesterday!

The benefits include ease of use and a reduction in power consumption if you charge more than one device.
They run at 70% effieciency for transfer of power and you do need an altered back panel for your device, currently only the devices you can see supported on http://www.powermat.com

This page is also very interesting: http://www.wirelesspowerconsortium.com/ as it's the organisation behind research into the tech, and you can see that Nokia is signed up. I've read that Nokia is working on a propriatory device of their own for their phones. Clearly the batteries and battery covers of nokia phones would be ripe for this technology as OEM in the future.

I think we will see this very popular in the next few years.

You already have this tech around you know, cordless toothbrushes have done it for a while.....

It is defo something i would buy just for the novelty factor although no multiple charges etc is a real bonus

Re: Powermat, what's that all about

Remember the major mobile manufacturers have already agreed to settle on one common design for chargers, so you might only need one corded charger in the future anyhow, regardless of this cordless thingy.

It looks cool, it bleeps when you put something on it, it has cool underlighting....

come on guys, you know that's enough to want it eh?
