....sounds swell! make sure the price is adapted to the 'un'presence of B&p.
Been offered an '81 (ser. 7153xxxx), 16800, tritium matte dial. 3035 movement. I'd put it at 95%+....but...
.....no box and papers!
Just returned from Rolex service so has the service record and definitely not on the stolen register.
What's it worth?
ETA. movement
....sounds swell! make sure the price is adapted to the 'un'presence of B&p.
If you know that much about it you know what it's worth.
Cheers,
Neil.
That's the problem.
A quick internet search shows similar watches going for upto £7.5k!!! Needless to say, this one is considerably cheaper than that but without the B and P's what is it worth??
How much value do the papers add?
Vintage prices tend to assume no box and papers, and their prescence actually adds a premium, rather than the other way around as with modern watches.
Sounds nice though. Just bought a '79 1680 myself, as have a few others there.
There's one here, sounds like it's in good nick, no box and papers, £3,495.

Been for sale for a little while, I know this because I kept looking at it and going "hmmm..."
Bought a two year old GMTII with B&P for usefully less in the end though.
Long term the vintage Sub Date may prove to have been a better investment, but who knows?
Quite an early one, with RSC service so presume in top condition, also assuming original dial, hands and insert then.................
£3400
That one is an extra £95 because it has been dive tested :POriginally Posted by Ari
Neil.C, i've only just started looking into Rolex and was initially after a GMTII BUT if this is a steal then it'll be bought to flip.
Would an '81 watch have the 3135 or 3035?
The first numbers of the serial are 7153.
Thanks for the advice so far.
dont quote me darko, but i thought the 16800 from 81 had the 3035 movement.?Originally Posted by darko

As the proud wearer of a matt dial 16800, I can certainly attest to the practicality of the transitional, pseudo vintage, Subby...

I misheard the guy on the phone first time round and incorrectly stated it was a 3135, when actually it's a 3035. :D
Its on hold now and possibly getting picked up tomorrow. :bounce:

I have one with Box and papers, calender, booklets, anchor, etc, etc. Just been serviced and is very minty - which I will sell for a bargin £7000 :D ......... and it has dive history.
These are great watches.

It's 'hunted'.
Just got to check its still got the original hands. The dial is so i'd assume they were asked not to change anything when it was serviced.
Overall it appears to have been a 25 year safe queen!

For a loose watch (no box and papers if it's in the condition you state then £3-3.5k is probably the ballpark. For me though the loose watches are always a wildcard purchase - depends on your views.Originally Posted by darko

Perhaps too late, but in this part of the world, they're going for just under GBP3,000. I'd add abit in to account for the recent service.
Cheers!

This one is cheaper still, with the service. Off back to have another look in an hour or so....i'll report back.Originally Posted by shaugn

Whoa that looks good! Congrats on the acquisition! :)
Btw, is the date wheel silver?
Nope, white/cream, along with the pearl. No glow from the hands or markers, but the pearl is quite visible the dark.Originally Posted by shaugn

Ah thanks for that. I've read some of the earlier 16800s came with a silver date wheel like the 1680s. Luminova pearl? Perhaps you could try sourcing a NOS tritium pearl. I really love the coffee colour these older pearls acquire over the years... Yum! :DOriginally Posted by darko
looks very nice, as for price anywhere from £2750-£3500(retail) seems fair, especially with service papers.
I paid less than your quoted figures. Happy days. :thumbleft:Originally Posted by jedly1
I've no idea about the pearl. Would it originally have been a tritium? And never heard of the silver date wheels. I know very little about the sub, movements etc. and it was only by luck that this cropped up. I best get reading! :?Originally Posted by shaugn

very nice dial on that one, a future (if not already) very collectable model of sub - enjoy wearing it and hang on to it :)
Also, thanks for the ETA acroynm, not seen that one before but it makes sense, if a bit a confusing on a watch forum
With hindsight EFA (Edited For Accuracy) might've been more appropriate
Needless to say i'm over the moon with it. Thanks to all for the advice.
Sounds like you got a stellar deal! :)Originally Posted by darko
The pearl would have been tritium. Replacement NOS tritium pearls can be found sometimes. Someone wrote a mini review on the 16800 here... That particular example was manufactured earlier than yours and had a silver date wheel installed.
Wonderful. That is properly nice.
