PRS-5 on active service in Afghanistan-more pics 13 Nov 09

One of our number, who wishes to remain anonymous, is currently doing his bit in Afghanistan and sent me a few pictures to post. More to come later.

    Dear Eddie

Some pics from Afghanistan. Not easy to take pics when on the move of the PRS-5. There are a few more to come that I will send this weekend.

The later pic of another watch is that worn by a S.Korean Lt Col., and it was given to him as a gift by the President of S.Korea. It is made in Korea.

More pics added 12 May 2009

    A couple more added 13 May 2009

Like the watch in the bottom picture (too),

It has something about its quirky style.

Well said, I heartily agree. Our armed forces offer the ultimate sacrifice for all of us every day of their working lives. We are very much in their debt.

It's an old joke in Germany that you see lots of used Mercs (or Daimlers to use the local nomenclature) and BMWs in Poland and Ukraine still with the D on the bootlid. When I was in Kabul a few years back (in quieter times) I saw numerous cars still with their original German plates on (and one Brit). Somehow I don't think these were German holidaymakers - there was certainly no towel on the rear parcel shelf.
    In the Sotadic Zone, apparently.

From the photos, I'd say he's a contractor. Not that anyone should wish him any less luck for that. IME, contractors have their hind-end hanging out more than most military folks.

C-B, that's cloth, not a carpet. The rugs are shockingly cheap in A'stan. I felt guilty paying a couple hundred dollars for what was obviously a few months work (plus $50 or so in material cost) by a person. The value of hourly labour is negligible in that country :|

Re: PRS-5 on active service in Afghanistan-more pics

Another brief report from our forum member in Afghanistan. I'm sure you understand that he can't say too much.

Plenty happening and hopefully some good pics to post

Attended the COMISAF conference last week where McChrystal, Dutton and other commanders were ( the room was measured in stars ()).What I can say is as is stated in the papers, they are keen to adjust strategy to address the insurgency, and are positively making efforts to do so.

All the best and look forward to being in touch soon.

    Benelli M4 + HK-36C = Nice :thumbleft:

On the other hand I am missing a magazine (not to speak of body armour /vest etc..)

Watch related question: Wouldn't be a Natp-Strap be more convenient than a leather strap given the weather conditions?

In my experience, leather is not always hotter than canvas, and also, in dry climates NATOs can be a little 'hard on the skin' whereas leather is supple.

In the heat, I imagine bodyarmour is not ideal, and also not madatory for all as far as I'm aware. It depends on the ops too

Nice watch and some memories from those photos, most of those shots are the Jalabad road that leadsfrom Kabul, ie the Mousad roundabout past the Russian flats and down towards the AFG camp where the shots with the HK are taken, many companies use the ranges at the back of the camp there, very dangerous road as it passes the main British camp and later on a US camp and a ISAF camp, many big bangs on that road.

    Keep your head down fella.

Possibly no magazine on the weapon because the chap holding the weapon maybe the client and not the operator ?? hence the time to take photos when out on the road.

    Hi Paul,

just the HK and I was lucky that I never had to use it in real.

For hunting the Benelli would seem to be quite nice but it does not concour
with the honour of a hunter, of course.

My favourite weapon in active time was this:

Anyhow, back to watches, I know that a smelling watch strap is a minor problem out there,
and I wish Mr. X all the best . Stay safe!

Frank, is that a .30 Browning mounted on a Bv206? I don't think I've seen that before. In a past life I used to be a Foreign Equipment Recognition instructor.

No, only the Norwegians where equipped like that (pic from AMF exercise in North-Norway, 2000).

We poor Germans just had our trusty MG-3

But the Bv206 as standard motorized transport (winter)
