Hi all, I have a watch coming from a mate in Japan, the IDIOT parcelforce has it with this tracking status and I was wondering if any of you could answer three quick questions...

3 - Do they open up the package? It's a watch that will have it's full value declared by the sender (so it's properly insured) I have nothing to hide...just don't want them arsing around with my wife's anniversary present :evil:

you will get a card saying you have to collect it
there will be a tax charge and £8 handleing charge added by royal mail
its usually delayed as well

From my experience with customs your situation
means that charges will be incurred on the item.
The parcel will not usually be opened, and the
charges will be worked out on the declared value
posted on the box.
Unavoidable in 99.99% of cases - apart from the odd
fluke!
You'll probably get a letter in several weeks asking for the
taxes to be paid. I hoped that a recent watch hade gone
under the radar - but the letter duly arrived after 3 weeks
much to my disappointment!
1. Yes, they will charge you if it's above the limit.
2. Yes, expect a couple of weeks wait, i had an item arrive from the US into the UK within 48 hours, then it was at customs for over 2 weeks.
3. If they feel the item isn't exactly as descibed and valued they can open the parcel, they do a certain amount and look the item up on the internet, so if you have a Rolex Submariner at £3200 coming in and have it down as £100 they will more than likely screw you if they open the parcel.

From my experience:
1. Yes, unless there is an invoice declaring it for under £16 that customs actually believe is correct.
2. No. You can speed things up by calling the Parcel Force office where your package is located. Now they have this in the system your package will also be assigned a reference number. Ask them for this reference number. Once obtained call back and select the option to pay customs fees. Pay the fees by CC over the automated system or do it with one of the staff on the phone. Now you've paid the fees Parcel Force can deliver the package to you the moment it arrives with them, or at the next possible chance, instead of it going into another period of storage whilst they send you the letter with that reference number and wait for you to ring in a pay it.
3. Not normally but if they cannot find an invoice on the outside of the package they often will.

ps; apologies for invading your post. I have also tried to help parcelforce along-but to no avail, you'll probably just have to wait.
Call them. You're able to pay over the phone with a credit card which speeds things up.

At some point the tracking will tell you which regional office it has been despatched to. In my case, it was the regional office which sent the letter. I did not wait for this, I contacted the office and paid over the phone. This meant I got the package a little earlier.

Often they don't rush to contact you so best to chase it up.
Duty is usually around 4%, then VAT at 17.5% and then Parcel Farce fee's usually £8.00, should give you a rough idea of the total cost.

John - my final words to you are simple - you are in no position to call or make statements about anybody until you get your own house in order in respect of the matter you seem happy to couch opinions on - particularly when you damn those you do not like and high five those you do. I got in touch with Parcelfarce by the way...apparently I still have to wait for them to decide on the charges (I need to wait until it ends up at my local depot before I can try and pay them), whihc will take "a few days at least" :roll: However, I found out the friend who set me the package marked it "used clock - $75". Which is good - I might not get burned - or worried as I think they'll go poking. :?
However, it does raise an problem for Parcelfarce; the stuff I'm waiting for is used, so who defines what it is worth?
They usually use the customs declaration as the first step, if the price looks right then 'no problem', if it the declared price is severely undervalued then it will lead to further checks,After all the guys doing the charging do it day in,day out so they've most likely seen most everything you can stick a charge on!!

My trusty mate marked the package as 'used clock...$75' and customs bought it, so I only had to pay £20.80. In the box was a Seiko for my wife....
And a Speedy Pro for me :D. So, it worked out well in the end.
Overall, Parcelforce were not as bad as they could have been. it took longer than I think necessary, but they did let me go stright to the Depot once it arrived there and pay and collect within a few mins.
But, £13.50 of the charges were Parcelforce 'handling' charges! :evil: Seems a bit steep to me! Still I have my stuff and 20 quid wasn't as bad as I dreaded so I can't grumble too much.
Again, anyone who replied, it was much appreciated! :wink:

Nope, I didn't know about the speedy or the dodgy customs note - that came as a surprise. The Seiko was only worth $100 so I thought he'd just used a bit of common sense.
If it was a seller I'd have been annoyed, but it was an old friend who works in Chiba prefecture so he pulled a fast one! :lol: Good job he never told me about my belated wedding present ( :D ) then I would have been stressing.
if your ate would have marked the parcel as a repair .. there would not be any import tax . craig
