Get a ZTE or Huawei 4G mobile router from cex
Looking at getting a mobile router that I can buy a SIM card for, when abroad on holidays.
I would buy a local SIM for the country I’m in.
Basically don't want to rely on the WIFI at the resort as it can be patchy, especially in India.
Who can recommend me a good mid-priced unit.

You should look into e-sim's, most phones nowadays can use them. When I'm now traveling somewhere for business, I just buy 10GB of data for that country (or area) through an online provider and activate that when I arrive. No hassle at all and no extra devices or physical sim cards.
I usually use mobimatter, here for India: https://mobimatter.com/travel-esim/india?selected=IN
I use an eSIM router for my devices and a physical sim hotspot device with Ethernet for extra security when traveling.
Some countries require a lot of paperwork to sign up for a temp sim or when I just want to use when I land eSIM is the preferred course.
When I have time I get physical SIM card and use these as I find these have better data packages.
Forget about wi-fi and just enjoy your holiday
and if you are concerned about the country you are in you could get a gl.net mini router that
is the size of a pack of cards and put a vpn on it and set it up as a wifi hot spot.
I dont know if there are versions that take sim cards.
