Yep. About 6 months ago (and with the mortgage paid and the kids growing up fast) I decided to quit a job I really didn’t like working for a large corporate and go back to what I trained for when I left school as an industrial chiller engineer. Suffice to say, I’m loving life, spending a lot more time at home with the kids and my financial situation means I don’t really miss the money. I’m not saying it’s going to be forever, and yeah, you could call it a huge mid life crisis cliche, but I’m happier!!
Now that I’m back using my hands, big spanners, and working hard for a living I needed a cheap rough and tumble watch that will put up with anything thrown at it and keep ticking. Oh, and I often have to stick my hands inside electrical control panels so anything metal is out of the question.
Ladies and gentlemen, of course it’s an F-91 W delivered by Santa yesterday.
Merry Christmas one and all - probably going to buy a motorbike next.

My son did manage to lose at least two of them during their days at high school.
So great for a midlife crisis - or go all out and go Jacob & Co. Bucherer have a few more expensive models in stock ready to go ;)

Don’t sell all the GMTs in one go though, you’ll flood the market!
There’s some fancy modules you can buy to retrofit it with Bluetooth connectivity and temperature-compensated high accuracy timekeeping if you wanted to go all out! The new modules do cost several times as much as the original watch and might make it less of a beater though…

Arguably you’ve got the ultimate tool watch. However, I think you could have stretched to a mid price G Shock
Have seen other (mainly analogue) Casios retrofitted with mineral oil fill but only just went and looked that mod with the F91-W up… one madlad did it with olive oil!Originally Posted by JasonM

Darak watches on u tube shows hydro modding a watch. It looks an incredibly risky thing if the the watchws internals ( pcb etc) is not oil resistant. All to boost depth rating from 200m to 600 then 2000m.
I wonder if that would make it safe for me to shower in my sub ? Or better still do the dishes.
I use my Casio G-Shock DW5610U-1ER for all my rough & tumble activities.....it's a fantastic all rounder and can take a beating no problem.
Casio f91w has been my beater of choice for the past 25 years, small enough to be unobtrusive, cheap enough to throw away and replace when it gets damaged. can’t say I like the look of it but it's the ultimate tool watch.
Good choice of watch, saves money for the Harley.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.
I’ve known people do it but mainly to genuinely cheap watches like the F91 or other sub-G Casios like the MDV106. Not something I’d do to anything much more expensive.
And yes hydromodding your sub would make it safe to shower in… and the movement stopping because it doesn’t have enough torque to run through the oil means you’d never have to service it either! Win-win! ;)
I would rather have that watch then any made by the big R.
When I see people wearing them I always compliment them.
I still could not beat it up though however cheap.

Yeah, I feel that the OP is not doing this whole mid-life crisis thing correctly. Here he is making sensible decisions and enjoying time with his family, when what he's supposed to be doing is buying an Electra Glide and a fringed leather jacket and trying but failing to have an affair with a much younger work colleague.

As an aside, if you run through the list of watches in the Jura sale there's some good stuff, but also evidence of quite a lot of really dubious decisions on the part of their buyer.

Surely the true mid life crisis watch would be some massive Diver's watch - WR to at least 1000m - and as big as a church clock, the perfect watch for all those tough macho activities you are now never going to do?
You see, the watch I most regret selling is a leftie Panerai Luminor 219 (I think that was the reference) - as I progress through my 50’s something with big hands on a massive dial that I can actually tell the time on really appeals. I remember spotting Felicity Kendall and Richard Wilson wearing huge Panerai when they were the celeb watch of choice a few years ago - even Hugh Grant wears one - but I suspect it’s a cure for short sightedness as opposed to anything a bit Walter Mitty! Ps I love a Casio but the F91 is positively diddy?! Must be the Casio version of a 36mm men’s watch?
