Thread: Recommend a password manager

    Recommend a password manager

Had a quick search but couldn’t find anything (which surprised me). Anybody using a password managing app that they would recommend please?

If you use chrome the built in one is good - passwords.google.com

If you use apple iCloud Keychain is good https://support.apple.com/en-gb/HT204085

If you want to mix between platforms Bitwarden is good and free for individuals https://bitwarden.com/pricing/

I've been with Last Pass for over a decade. Faultless.

Whatever you choose, I'd hold fire for the Black Friday deals (although many are already on) as current subscription prices may be inflated to make the deals look better. Password managers, VPNs etc. all get big discounts at this time of year.

KeePass - open source, completely free of charge, very well respected, lots of plug-ins in the ecosystem, supports most platforms.

They've been hacked several times, not software I'd trust.

Not sure what you need the App to do, but I use '1 Password 7' on my iPhone to store all my passwords as I have a habit of forgetting them. That's all I do with it though, just a secure storage vault really.
Started out with nothing. Still have most of it left.

Keepass is good. Passpack's a good one, as well. Just in case you consider it, Password Manager Pro is pretty awful; cumbersome and awkward.

Mostly I use simple encrypted text files.

I can't remember the reason but when I was choosing a pw manager for myself, I went with KeePassXC: https://keepassxc.org/ -- I use it on Linux but I see they have downloads for Windows, too.

Used Lastpass for years but got spooked when they got hacked.

Move to BitWarden, no hesitation to recommend, it’s great. I pay premium subscription not because the features are needed but to simply support the product as it’s that good.

Works fine on my iphone with the safari integration, and on my pc using the chrome plugin and desktop app.

Used to use Lastlass until they changed their model, moved over to BitWarden and to date no complaints.

Surely you are aware that not only have they been hacked & all encrypted customer vaults stolen but that there is strong evidence that due to poor minimum security implementation some of those vaults have been decrytped & all passwords revealed?

    https://www.theregister.com/2022/12/01/lastpass/
    https://www.theregister.com/2022/12/...attack_update/
    https://www.theregister.com/2023/11/...nounce_breach/
    https://www.theregister.com/2023/01/...ass_bitwarden/

I'd suggest you consider changing for Lastpass to something like Bitwarden, but also crucially consider changing your passwords afterwards. Your encrypted vault has been stolen & if you used the default encryption parameters it's may be vulnerable to attack.

One aspect of Password Managers that users may care to consider is the abilty to provide access to to a trusted party should you become incapacitated or die. If you use it them at least your family will be able to access the accounts & passwords you had set up rather than being locked out.

I moved away from LastPass (which was good) after two hacks and its change in business model meaning that if you use it across multiple platform types you need to pay (and I have nothing against paying for software). I moved to Bitwarden which has been excellent, useable across all platforms I need (PC, laptop, iPhone and iPad) and, as mentioned previously, free for personal use.

Thanks, although I was aware of one such incident and changed my password at the time. I hadn’t realised that had been multiple attacks on their servers and will likely now look to change. In fact, Bitwarden looks pretty good.

    Quite.

They also moved away from a free multi platform model. I switched to using BitWarden no issues it all, definitely recommend.

Keepass for me too as it was recommended on another tread on here.

I've got it setup as standalone database work no cloud. Android version on phone and portable version on a USB drive for work.

It is a bit clunky as I have to manually put the updated database on both devices but I'm happy with managing this.

    Keepass, Codebook or proton pass.

    Keychain is very convenient.

I wouldn’t use any of them for financial accounts, obvious targets for hackers as evidenced by some that have already been hacked.

    I use my own cipher.

Am I the only person to use a pen & paper to log password details?

I've been a paying customer of 1Password since 2009. It's an excellent password manager with apps for Android, iOS, MacOS and Windows as well as a web based version. It works on the basis of a single password and a secret key for encryption. 1Password do not have access to that key so it is impossible for them to access your data.

In the last few weeks it has been adopted by my work after a long research project by our head of cyber security.

I wouldn't use Last Pass. they were very coy about their data breaches.

If anyone does use one of the recommended Password Managers I strongly suggest that they make use of any emergency key recovery/access features that are present as if you forget the master password you cannot recover it.

This also goes for anyone using Bitlocker on Windows - use the key recovery/backup feature & keep it somewhere safe.

I use Dashlane at work. I find it a bit annoying but that probably says more about work than the software

Chrome for everything else, which is great as it works across platforms.

I used Dashlane some years ago, and was rather alarmed at the way it was able to automatically retrieve all my passwords from Chrome. Hopefully it's not so easy therse days.

I'm still using e-wallet from way back.

Doesn't have 2FA, but still gets decent reviews.

You can sync across all your devices which is handy for doing updates on laptop and then updating phone and ipad.

Maybe should change, but that can be a hassle.

Bit warden for internet sync or keepassxc for local import export.
