Thread: Bird call ID

  1. #1

    Bird call ID

Can anyone help me ID this bird call please, Merlin does not recognise it, I’m sure my father would have known.

It is owl-like but not like the owls I usually hear, we have had large non-native escaped owls in the past.

Heard about 0145 last night, south west England.

Are you sure that it is not a fox?

Fairly. It went on for about 30m (same call each time) but then stopped after the recording (I think it heard me using the loo).

It certainly sounds like a fox to me, we hear them frequently around us.

The only birds we hear at night are tawny owls.

Plus one for a fox to be honest. Right time of night and the right time of year for females to be barking out to attract males.

Thanks chaps. A stuck-record fox it must have been.
